DVM-PhD c/o 2029 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also it is def weird that Penn hasn’t sent DVM invites to anyone. They have always sent first wave by Dec 15 according to past threads so maybe the admissions office has changed?
Penn's website says that they plan to send out interview invites for the VMD program in mid-January, then final decisions by the end of February. The timeline for the dual degree program is a little more ambiguous, but I doubt that they'll send anything before then.

They have said that we will not hear from them until mid-January.

is anyone here anxious that this won't be the cycle? anyone considering grad programs?

I literally applied to three BME master’s programs as a plan B. Watch me get rejected from all of them bc they’re nearly as competitive as vet school XD

I have an update as well... NCSU emailed me today saying that I did not miss an interview invite and that I should expect to hear decisions in late Feb. So...no interview? 🤔 :poke:

Also got rejected from Penn dual and Cornell. So now just waiting for NCSU, UW Madison, and VMRCVM

we'll be alright. also im surprised they send out all THE WHOLE application in the same email!! so u can read ur letters lol

huh, wdym by letters? I just got an attachment with the same text as the email but I didn’t see my application

Is the OK State DVM-PhD program new? I didn't see it on the NAVS website

I believe it is not new, I met some students in that program on August 2024. I don't know how many years it has been active though you can ask them directly or look online to see if they have a history section

although i was rejected for dual degree at Penn, I did get waitlisted for interviews so… lets hope someone rejects their interview

Damn, there’s nine people interviewing for NCSU. So not a lot of pressure XD

Hey guys! Just curious, has anyone applying for Cornell's dual heard back from them on the interview front? do y'all know if it would be in person or zoom, when to expect it, etc? Since I heard they interview only about 5-6 and take 1-2, I am kind of assuming it's a no unless I hear anything else tbh 😅

I believe if you were accepted to the DVM at Cornell, they forward your application to the DVM PhD committee.. so it depends on if you've been accepted; if that's the case I would suggest to write to them!

still expecting news from UPenn.. have not gotten off the interview waitlist... anyone in the same boat?

I really just wish to enter vet med and then sort out the combined degree thing... or just be a vet and do a post-doc w just that vet degree
I am a DVM PhD. I did my PhD after my DVM and glad I did. I graduated with my DVM class and got a decent salary during my PhD. I did my PhD in a human hospital so doing it afterward opened up more doors for me imo

Tbh same at this point. I would kind of rather just be a vet that does clinical research on the side, then have a whole PhD

I’ve been debating this as well, whether I should do combined or post dvm.
I’d prefer a combined program for the tuition, but I’ve heard doing a PhD separately is oftentimes better since you can be more impactful with it.
My concern is how to manage paying off debt while doing post dvm training (I.e., what is the average salary?)

I deferred my loan. I had a consolidation loan so it was only one. I locked in a 2.5% interest from luck. There was still compounded interest which I tried to pay when working relief shifts during my PhD

Thanks! I still have day two tomorrow, but the first day was pretty good.

Also, I really hope the loan forgiveness program is still there in a few years and the orange man doesn't try to do something stupid like dissolve the NIH lol

What’s everyone’s dream school or career?

Mine is NCSU so I’ve been DYING to hear anything from them still. I’m still figuring out what route I want to take for getting a PhD but I’m hoping to end up somewhere in academia and do veterinary research

Hey, just wondering, what was your main incentive to add on the PhD? I was talking with a PI whose research really interests me (wildlife conservation, mating systems, functional ecology type stuff), and she was like, "girl your sound like you just wanna do research," but then I told her why I wanted to still do vet, and she was like, "well now you just sound like you wanna do vet... so why do you wanna do both? 8 yrs is long." I kinda didn't even know what to say other than I don't want to give up on research because I just like it.

It might help to look at job postings and see if you can identify what jobs you are most interested in, and then see if they require a DVM or PhD or both. If you can't do your dream career without both degrees, there's your answer! If you can do it with just one, that's where you might have to justify to yourself the pros vs cons of 8+ years in school.

to be fair there were eight other people with different yet equally impressive research. plus most of them took gap year(s)

I got ill when doing a residency and was offered a PhD to be less stressful 😂 yeah right😂 I did get myself better health wise and finished my PhD. I guess I’ve just always been interested in both clinical and research and I can be in both worlds this way.

are Penn and Davis the only programs that let you choose your PhD department?
