no, driving drunk is similar to driving blind

You have obviously never done it before...

Come on people, drunk driving laws are absolutely ridiculous as is. The punishments handed down (at least here in ohio) are extreme, and the 0.08 is exceedingly low. In Ohio the 4th offense is a FELONY, meaning you can lose your right to vote etc etc for commiting a "crime" that has never affected another living soul (ie. 4 DUIs, no wrecks). They also steal your car from you after the 4th offense and theoretically could put you in jail for LIFE. The first offense here is a mandatory 3 days in jail plus some lengthy license suspension. Absolutely insane...and I blame the wacko MADD crowd.

OP: Smart move in consulting your lawer...i'd just go with whatever they suggest.

Technically, at least in COlorado, DWI is a traffic offense, NOT a criminal offense. Is it a crime? Hmmm.... Hard to say that one. I spose if you get down to the actual letter of the law it isn't a crime per se since it's not a criminal offense. Ask your lawyer - in Colorado, DWI is misdemeanor traffic offense, but in some states DWI is misdemeanor criminal offense, and is therefore a crime.

I still say you have a friend call your med schools for you and ask anonymously. I also still say to try and get a deferment for this one. It's your first offense and you may be able to wipe it totally after 6 months if you're a boy scout during that time.

absolutely ridiculous is thinking that drunk driving isn't a big deal. people are rationalizing for behavior that is entirely reprehensible. it seems like no one is willing to accept responsibility anymore. driving is a privilege, not a right. at least the OP isn't making this sound like it's nothing. hopefully, the OP has learned from the mistake

absolutely ridiculous is thinking that taking away your car after you've been caught drunk driving four times is absolutely insane

you think that's an extreme punishment? i knew someone in high school that had much worse. a car of three people, he was the driver and the only one wearing a seat belt. he was driving with his best friends. all of them were drunk. inevitably, they got into an accident. when he finally gained consciousness he was in a hospital. first thing he asked was where his best friends were. the staff informed him, "sorry to tell you this kid, your friends didn't make it." imagine living the rest of your life knowing you killed your two best friends. and you think taking away a car after getting caught four times is extreme punishment?

absolutely insane is making light of the mothers who have lost their sons and daughters to drunk drivers. the first funeral i ever went to was a teen that got killed by a drunk driver. you should have seen his mother's face. the incessant tears that ran down as she embraced her son for the last time... and the look in her eyes as she stepped away from his body knowing the son she loved so much was gone...

try looking at these mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends who've lost their loved ones to drunk driving. try and tell them with a straight face, "drunk driving laws are absolutely ridiculous and the punishments are extreme."

Juuuuuust kidding

In response to Elpis and Logos...

I tend to side with logos on this issue, that the "MADD crowd," similar to any similar group like the Tipper Gores and the anti-Smoking folks, get away with a lot of ridiculous exaggerations and absurd stats because, honestly, logos sounds like a total a$$ arguing FOR drunk drivers. This is a position I find myself in all the time, knowing that what people are claiming is absolutely ridiculous, but losing just because its so uncomfortable standing up for a behavior deemed reprehensible. Listen, if someone did something intentional to themselves and a death or accident was a direct result of that, thats bad and I think there should be a harsher penalty than if they simply got in an accident. But to say that driving with a .08, something that was ABSOLUTELY SAFE AND LEGAL until about 4 years ago, when we all became incapable of handling our alcohol, is equivalent to driving blind? That is absolutely ridiculous I dont have any stats to back it up, but I would certainly venture to say that driving with screaming kids, obnoxious pets, even more obnoxious girlfriends, cell phones and big macs is on a par with .08. Whens the last time someone got their license taken away because of 4 big macs?

I don't know if anybody suggested this...i kind of stopped reading once the posts went off on a speeding tangent. You said that you got accepted to three schools right? Well out of those three there has to be one that is not your highest priority. Why dont' you just inform that school to start out with? If they don't care then you can probably bet that the other two won't. If the other two do care, then oh well, you'll just have to go to your backup. On the other hand, if your backup rejects you after telling them, I'm not sure what you should do about telling the other two schools. I guess I wouldn't worry about that until you have to. You really should tell the medical schools though. Don't forget, while we all for some reason live in fear of the ADCOM's, they are people too. They realize that everyone makes mistakes!! On the grand scale of things, blowing a .08 is a minor offense in my opinion. You wouldn't even be considered legally drunk in my state. But you made a mistake...don't make another one by lying or trying to hide it from them. Own up to it, and i can promise you the school will respect you (i.e. not take back your acceptance). Try to hide it, and well, you can bet that when you are one day away from finally dawning that white coat, you'll receive a phone call that tells you otherwise. In my experience that's just the way s#$* happens.
