  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
Hello. I am a college student working on a degree in Health Promotion & Wellness. My questions are about working as an E.R. Tech at a local hospital while attending college. I would just like to hear some opinions, suggestions, testimonies, etc. on working in the ED while in college. A little background is that I enlisted in the Army Reserve after 2 years of college and am within 3 weeks of graduation the Health Care Specialist/Combat Medic course. I plan on returning to school in January but until then I have been looking in to getting a job as an E.R. Tech at one of the local hospitals. I already obtained my EMT-B in my course here and plan on enrolling to obtain a CNA as soon as I get home. My course work here will translate into college credits so I don't plan on taking a heavy workload of classes when I return just the full-time minimum of 12 hours. In a perfect world I would love to work 3 days a week, preferably longer shifts such as 12 hours being used to working all day for the past 8 months in the Army and not having to work weekends because of preference and that for at least a weekend a month I have to work with my unit. Also my mother works at one of the local hospitals in Admissions and will help with talking to higher ranking officials. I truly have more of a passion working in Orthopedics because I've spent a lot of time in the ER with Ortho injuries throughout my life. I just want to know opinions and suggestions and what I could possibly do with this plan but still being in training I haven't been able to obtain any real information about this because everyone is active duty and have not worked in a civilian field while still performing Army duties.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a hospital job that does not require working any weekends. Other than that, your plan seems decent. I worked as an ED tech and EMT/paramedic during my education, and it worked out pretty good.

Most part time er tech positions are nights/weekends/holidays to give the full time staff time off.
I was a part time er tech all through college 26 hrs/week working every sat and sun 8a-9p and full time summers 6 days/week.

Not a bad gig to get some experience. It does depend on where you work. Do a little research about the hospitals in your area and try to get in touch with some employees, but I understand that might be hard being in the military. Talk to you EMT instructor maybe? Anyway, I know places where a 'Tech' is a glorified janitor and other places that allows them to practice some of their EMS based skilled (or in your case military based) such as IV's, phlebotomy, push meds etc.
