well, with the application season unofficially underway (since programs can now download our info from ERAS), I thought I would ask what the earliest date was that people were offered interviews in years passed.....

while dean's letters don't come out until 11/1, a recent J of Emergency Medicine article stated that about 80% of EM residents were offered interviews before that date (JEM July 2007. Early Invitations for residency interviews. Delorio et al., pp. 77-79)

so, when did you get your earliest interview invite?

was it before all of your info was in (e.g. LORs)?

The earliest interview date offered was October 30th.

But many (if not most all of my interview offers) came within the first 2 weeks of October.

my first invite was 9/29, most of the rest came in the next 6 weeks. additional invitations will come as people cancel interviews. my last invite came in january.
i'd also say dont be afraid to contact a program that you are really interested in and see if you can interview there. i was able to get two interviews that way, and many of my classmates also got interviews at various programs after simply contacting the program to express interest if they hadn't heard anything back

how exactly do you go about contacting the program to request an interview? did you actually call/email the residency administrator, or the program directer? thanks.

i just called/emailed the program's contact person, usually a secretary and said either i'm in the area if i was nearby, or that i hadnt heard anything but was really interested in the program. even people who get a reject sometimes get an invite by re-expressing how much they really want the opportunity to interview at a place.

I know it's easier said than done, especially now that I'm the other side, but be patient. It's wednesday after a long holiday weekend. Keep in mind that the ERAS mailbox has to be tested on the programs end before they start downloading anything, especially the filters they put in for "screening." Also, keep in mind that the applications have to be reviewed by someone in the residency selection process. It's gonna be a few weeks before many of you hear a peep from any program. It's early and the programs are just starting to get their stuff set up. They have to figure out what faculty will be around during their presumed interview dates, etc. So there is a lot going on behind the scenes that you guys aren't aware of. Just be patient. Programs have really only had the ability to download apps for 2 days since it was a long weekend.

what do you mean by programs setting up screening filters? Are program directors able to set up cut off rates for USMLE scores so that they don't download applications that don't meet their requirements? I thought, i read somewhere that this wasn't possible?

My understanding was that it was. While there is no "published" minimum requirements for interview invites, I'd be hard pressed to believe that PD's actually don't have cutoffs. Does this mean you won't be invited? No. Who really knows what "filters" they use anyways? I'm sure there are others besides a USLME score cutoff.

Vanderbilt's first interview date this year is 10/25.

ERAS will download the application for each applicant who has designated a particular program. However, the program director has a wide variety of filtering tools that he can use or he can write his own using boolean logic. Most are things like the presence or absence of dean's letters, 2, 3 LORs, transcript, US grads, DOs, IMGs. But I think if I had a cutoff (and of course, I don't 😀), I could write a filter to avoid even opening the files of those not meeting the filter.

My first invite last year came during the last few days of September, and they were for dates in November. The majority came in early November though.

Most of the programs didn't even begin downloading my documents until October.

It's hard, but be patient.

I hope that BKN realizes that this represents god-like power over the lives of fourth year medical students...

"Fools! I will cast the IMGs into the Pits of Despair! I will make my Step 1 filter a 242! Those without 4 LORs will wither beneath my gaze! Bwah hah hah haha hah!"

As excited as you are to get all those invites, just wait till you start buying all those plane tickets, hotel rooms, and rental cars!
Once people start getting invites they will post them up on here and you can see what schools are offering. Last year it seemed like different schools started at different times, but based on the list we had here you could kind of tell when each program released a bunch of invites. I heard Cinci has already sent out 10 invites to their favorite applicants....did you get one?

I have my first interview this Wednesday, but not sure if this counts since I'm doing an away rotation here right now. They offered them at the beginning to those of us that were from other places. I do feel a bit unprepared since I don't have any SLORs yet (I hope to get 2-3 from this institution) and at this moment don't even have a PS up, but they are being very chill about everything.

Quite nervous right about now...:scared::scared:

I just got my first invite yesterday. Don't know when they're scheduling though. Hopefully not for a little while so I can buy a suit and go through some practice questions.

Don't pretend you don't have that complicated mathematical equation thing you tried to explain to us and failed miserably at making any of us understand 😱:meanie::laugh:

So who's going to start up the interview thread?
