I figured this thread would be an opportunity for those who only had a bill of $160 on their AMCAS app. For me, I feel like a loner out here when I am reading posts stating that applicants are applying to as many as fifty schools to my ONE! Yes, I am playing with fire, applying to one school, but hey, I will know before you, giving me an early start on finacial planning and etc. I am hoping to get in the University of Cincinnati due to its location near family and moral support. I know this is the school for me for personal and prof reasons. Please, for those doing the same, list where and why you are applying Early Decision.

160 bucks for one application! Holy crap! Last year I thought that it was $120 for the first school and $30 for every school after that.

Anyway, good luck man; it takes balls to go early decision.

Good luck on early desision. I wish you the best. I was actually thinking about it myself before I called Stanford and the guy told me indirectly that nobody gets in through ED and the guy at Johns Hopkins said that nobody's gotten in through ED in the last 7 years 😕

yea, I am really starting to sweat it now.

Do you know how many people UC admits through ED?

Yea, they admitted 16 last year

Don't feel so alone, I just submitted ED to IU.

hey, I'm in the same boat as you.

Applied EDP to USF. It truly is playing with fire, because if we get in, we're done by october and will be so happy and relaxed. God forbid we don't get in, we'll be the most unhappy people on this site.

I applied ED to Vanderbilt. I'm a re-applicant and after visiting and interviewing at 5 schools (out of the 10 I applied to), I know this is the school for me. I also have a friend who goes there, so I have an inside reference. I'm also wait listed there still for entrance this fall. Hopefully I'll get in one way or the other. Good luck to everyone else who applied ED!

where can i find stats on early decision? is the only place you indicate that you want to apply ED is on the primary or only through their secondary? Is it too late (if it is only through the primary) to apply to early decision if you indicated regular M.D. Program on the AMCAS?

To apply ED, you need to indicate so on your primary app. Some schools do not have a EDP, but those that do will have an option to click on in your AMCAS app. If you applied to more than one schools already, you cannot apply ED, at least not until you narrow your list down to one school. Most schools have information about the program on their admissions website.

Do you guys know when the school will actually get a copy of our application?

They get it a) after you have submitted the app & paid the fee, and b) as soon as the AMCAS people receive & verify your information. Sometimes this takes a few days, other times it takes weeks.

I'm not an applicant; I matriculate in 2 weeks. However, I applied ED to my school of choice last application cycle & made it. My reasons were a mixed bag: I had reason to believe I would get in (my stats were 2 standard deviations above the average for my school, and the rest of my app was cool), and this was the only school I really wanted to be at. I knew the risk of failure was low, so risking EDP was a calculated decision. I would have reapplied for another year before applying to other schools. Fortunately, I did not have to reapply.

EDP rules! We had our interviews before anyone else, and they emailed us the next day to let us know we were in. I stopped stressing about med school last September 29th! It's hilarious (and sad) when you consider that I have classmates who found out this week that they were accepted. My stomach hurt so bad during the app process, I don't think I could have lived through 10 months of waiting for an answer.

Good luck to all you other EDP applicants!

what were your stats...?? of what kinda of stats do they look for?

MCAT & GPA are the common stats most schools want to see.

My school had an average matriculant mcat score of 30, with a standard deviation of <1.5. I had a 33. I knew that my subjectives (ECs, letters, etc) were good, so I knew I was in good shape, as long as I didn't blow the interview.

Don't apply ED unless your MCAT score & gpa is higher than the average matriculant stats, for the school you are going for. Some people mistakenly believe that applying ED can make up for weak spots in your application. Those are (some) of the people who applied EDP and had to reapply after being turned down.

Have you guys heard anything from your schools yet?

I'm ED at MCG. Its a lot cheaper and much less stress.

Not yet here, but I would recommend you to call the office of admissions if they do not screen for secondaries. They will let yo know when they will be releasing them. Good luck

how do you figure out what the standard deviations are for a particular school in terms of GPA and MCAT?

Some schools store more information in publicly accessible areas than do others. I can't remember if I found it on the school website, on the AAMC website, or if I derived it from some other statistical info they disclosed.

If you can't find enough data to figure this out for your own school(s), you can make certain loose assumptions, for the sake of determining an estimate of your own competitiveness at a school. For example, as long as you are applying to what you believe to be a school that is typical of Med schools in general, you could use the nationwide AAMC MCAT data for matriculants to determine the std dev, etc., using the national std dev of matriculants as an estimate of the true std dev of mcat scores for your school.

One thing I don't think anyone has mentioned here is that it is a good idea to talk to the school to find out how they use ED. Some schools have ED, but rarely select people from it. (in which case it is reasonable to assume that you are not likely to be admitted there if you go ED) Some schools select a couple of ED applicants a year, while other schools use ED to select a decent fraction of their class. (This year, an unusually large number of ED applicants were selected at UAB, amounting to 8-10% of the total matriculating class.) Find out what your choice school thinks before submitting ED. You might hit a winner, or you might just be slowing down your apps to other schools (since you have to wait till you get rejected or postponed by the ED school, as per your agreement for EDP).

I was going to apply early to Stanford, for the same reasons as you actually, but decided against it due to advice from their admissions counselor. They only accept 2 out of 7-8 ED applicants every year and apparently it is very competitive. Plus if you get rejected, you will apply late or even be too late to apply for other schools. Plus I can't apply MSTP, which is a minus. Divide and Multiply, I always say.
I would encourage you to talk to the admissions counselor at cincinnati.

If the turnaround is so quick, why do they prevent EDP applicants from submitting other applications until October?

Because that's when you know about your EDP acceptance/rejection.

I'm applying EDP - main reason is because I'm not ready to move my family right now and give up my husband's income when there is a perfectly decent medical school just a few miles away from my house.

My stats are higher than the school's average (School: 3.7 and 29, Me: 3.93 and 37) and I have decent ECs I think. So we'll see how it goes. I'm waiting on a secondary - haven't heard anything from the school yet and I was verified 6/21.

Good luck to all the other EDPers!! I hope we can all relax with an acceptance in hand by October. 😀

bearkat1, i have applied EDP at UC as well....

Looks like a little competition here.

You'll get your acceptance. They'd be crazy not to give you a seat. Just don't be crazy at the interviews (which is what one Rhodes scholar I know did and didn't get accepted at any top school).

So you're telling me not to be myself then?

Hey guys.....I actually applied in 2006....and I was stuck on 4 waitlists...3 now since cleveland clinic already started school. I just submitted my amcas 2007 today...I applied EDP to Jefferson. I am currently on the waitlist there....but the dean recommended me to apply EDP...and she said that I could still come off the waitlist this year...so I guess I'm in a pretty good situation either way. If I got in Oct. 1st, reapplication wouldn't really have been that bad for me. Oh well, we'll see what happens.

No, I'm telling you not to be me. I'm dead scared of appearing slightly inhuman and machine-like to the interviewers, but I guess all engineers have that problem

Hey ms_nut, I hope to see you in class fall 2007 (that is if I make it, I'm sure you will). You and I both know that UC has a strong EDP. I talked to the assistant dean, and he told me, out out of 24 people, they admitted 16 for those matriculating in 2005! If you ask me thats awesome odds!

In case anyone wanted to know, I got an email from IU in response to their EDP. They said 95+% of all who appy EDP and meet the requirements are accepted.

Wow. The school I'm applying to usually only accepts one or two through EDP.

Some schools only have 1 or 2 EDP applicants.

Good point - maybe I should call and ask how many EDP applicants they typically get. I just assumed it would be quite a bit more, but maybe I'm wrong.

DONT Do EARLY DECISION unless you know you can get in... it almost ruined my life!!!

Dov, tell us more!

I might apply EDP to a school that last year accepted 20 out of 30ish, and doesn't hold EDPers to higher standards (per dean). It's the only place I want to be (for many reasons) and it's the school I have the absolute best chance with anyway. I'm nervous because my stats are all in line with their averages--not standard deviations above--although my ECs are probably stronger.

I feel like I have nothing to lose. I can always reapply after solidifying my app even more.

or maybe it was some of the johnny blue label that ruined it

That could ruin your life, kill your liver and empty your wallet all at the same time.

That's what i heard. The stats are good to get in EDP. Since i live and work in Cincinnati, this seemed like a good choice.Bear_kat , you do have great stats (mine are not as good as yours) ; good luck to you as well. The assistant dean seemed like a really nice guy. He was very helpful to me as well with the questions i had about EDP.

This waiting is killing me. I was verified on the 7th and still haven't heard anything.

it seems like the wait for EDP is exponentially more strenuous than for regular admissions because all your eggs are in one basket. hang in there, bro

I was verified Jun 26 and applied IU EDP. I still havent heard either.

Wow, they are taking their sweet time with all of this. Have you tried to contact IUSOM at all to see what is up?

No because I haven't heard of anyone else getting an IU secondary and I am pretty sure that IU takes a while to send their secondaries.
