Hi,
I am preparing to take the mcat this April and REALLY want to apply early decision to UNT Health Sciences DO School (Texas). I am a TX resident, have a 3.72 GPA and about a 3.54 science GPA. I am predicting that I will make around a 29 or 30 on the MCAT. Does anyone know about early decision programs? I am really scared that I won't be accepted and then will be behind. Also, I took 2.5 years off from school so I will be turning 26 when I apply. I would appreciate any advice.

Getting into med school is more than just the numbers. Sure those numbers will get your application looked at but what is behind the numbers? Have you done any research or followed any dreams? Have you worked or had a career? Have you volunteered your time and gotten your feet wet in a hospital or clinical setting? What drives you to be a doctor, and an osteopath? Is your personal statement powerful and did it relate all this information that I am asking?

I agree with Nate, don't assume this is a numbers game especially with DO schools. Good clinical experiences, a great application essay and of course the interview and reference letters all play a part. ANd of course the MCAT falls into play as well. 😉

I would not suggest you apply early decision. If you have what it takes then they will look at you early in the process and you may get accepted quickly. It keeps all your options open. I talked to an admissions director once and we talked about this very subject. She said unless you are an absolute stellar applicant, then don't apply early decision. She said she would rarely encourage anyone to apply early decision. And of course you do not know what your MCAT is going to be. Taking the real thing can be a bit different than the practice ones you've taken.

I have lslightly lower numbers than you, applied early in the process and was accepted Oct 10th. I did not apply early decision and therefore kept my options open.

That is just my opinion and what I have been told (MCV dean of admissions told me the above info).

Contact the school to find out the chances. TCOM's average science gpa equals your average science gpa. I would not apply EDP without a good reason to stay in DFW. I also would not make the decision before you get your MCAT score back.

With a 30 MCAT and >3.5 GPA (as long as you have ECs/DO shadowing/etc), you should get an early acceptance out of state to help the wait until February match.

If you apply early early onnnnn. Say JUNE. YOu should have no trouble what so ever hearing back about admission to multiple schools by Sept. WITHOUT Early desicion. Look at the accepted threads... some people knew as early as Aug.

EDP is not the only way to find out early. I found out this year on October 1 (2 weeks before many early decision)....I don't know particularly about TCOM, but if you apply early with aacom you can get early interviews and early acceptances.

Regardless of if you apply early decision at TCOM or not, I would still apply to other schools in June or July--an early application can be the difference between getting in and not getting in (yes it costs a bit of money, but you can probably hold interviews until after you would find out about TCOM--so the investment isn't THAT great).
