I was wondering if anybody has applied Early Decision and if it's worth it.

What if you get put on the normal que, would it be late to apply to other schools by then?

It's worth it if your application clearly exceeds what the school is looking for and you are confined to a limited geographic region for some reason. If you are rejected, October would be very late to submit to other schools and your chances of an acceptance are statistically diminished (though not impossible, especially if you have a very strong application).

I did early decision and would highly recommend it if you are set on going to a particular school. It saved me money and a lot of stress. I was interviewed in September of that year and had my acceptance by October 1st...

I did it and I dont recommend it. I got in but overall it is not worth the risk because it severely limits your choices of getting in later on if it does not work for that cycle.

I really only wanted to go to one school so I decided I rather apply there again than take my shot at my other state school.

I rather go their for residency.

I also did early decision and got in. I believe that everyone at my school who applied EDP got in (you couldn't even apply EDP unless your stats were at least average of the year before you) I spoke with other, older med students and it seems that this trend has continued for several years, at least at my school.

There is some debate on here as to whether or not it will put you in a financial bind regarding scholarships. For instance, if you have a rockin 4.0/40 and apply EDP somewhere, you will likely get in. That school now has no obligation to offer you "recruitment" scholarhships, since a part of EDP is a contractual agreement to attend that school if you are accepted.

PM me if you would like to talk specifics, or stay in touch with me if you wish to find out how much aid I actually get.

I'm considering applying EDP, but I'm worried, too, that it will limit my chances elsewhere if I don't get in. Will there be enough time to apply to other places? What about TMDSAS and AMCAS interaction? Can I apply TMDSAS and AMCAS early decision or do I have to wait to do the TMDSAS until I find out about the AMCAS EDP?

Kansaskid-

EDP Applicants are bound by the following program agreements:

Applicants Agree:

  • NOT to apply through the EDP if they have already submitted an initial or secondary application (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) to a U.S. allopathic medical school for a M.D. degree program for the current entering class.
  • To apply to only one medical school (AMCAS or non-AMCAS) through the Early Decision Program.

I thought about it but decided not to. It's too risky and it's pretty limiting. If you don't get in you're in trouble since you have to apply to everywhere else really late. It'd be nice to get in early, but if you have solid numbers (MCAT and GPA) then I say just go the normal route. You will probably get into the school you would do the EDP for anyway.
