There may be another thread about this, so I apologize in advance if that's the case.

My original understanding of ED was that if I submit my AMCAS and do early decision at school X, then the rest of the schools I'm applying to won't even consider my application until after school X has made a decision. This would consequently put me in a late spot for applying.

I was recently told, however, that applying ED to school X means that other schools that I'm applying to will review my application and send me secondaries and invite for interviews, etc, regardless of whether or not I'm applying ED. The only time anything would change as a result of applying ED to school X would be if school X accepted me, which in that case I would just not attend interviews/fill out secondaries for other schools.

Can someone clear this up for me please? Thank you 🙂😕

You can only apply to one school EDP and you have to wait until that school has made a decision on your application before you can apply elsewhere. The time delay makes EDP a risky proposition.

The only EDP program I would recommend is if your number one school has one of those EDP programs that lets you apply your sophomore year and is conditional on certain things, but at least you know a year early. any other EDP program puts you at a tremendous disadvantage at other schools.

I disagree. EDPs can be useful if you're 100% deadset on a school and have an MCAT and GPA above their median along with EC's that fit the school's mission. If they weren't useful for these types of students, why would they exist in the first place?

However, EDP is not for everyone. Apply at your own risk!

From my understanding, if you are accepted through ED to say x medical school you are obliged to matriculate to said school. It only does you any good if you're applying for your top choice and you're extremely competitive at that. Not to mention if you are rejected, you won't be submitting secondaries RD most likely until late October, so there goes that. Really think if it's going to be worth it. GL :luck:

I don't think EDP is as bad as everyone is saying. I'm personally doing EDP because I know where I want to go to medical and because it's so much cheaper.

Best advice I can give the OP is to contact someone on the admissions council and ask them if you're competitive for EDP. I've spoke with the dean and the associate dean at my (hopefully) school-to-be and they both seem really enthusiastic about my chances. If they respond to you with the same kind of assurance, I think EDP is worth the risk. Good luck!

I know I'm a couple months late on this, but I wanted to echo these posters. I applied EDP last year for these reasons and using these suggestions and it worked out well for me. I had strong ties to the area (ie, a mortgage and kids in school), my GPA was fair and my MCAT was above average. I met with the dean. I volunteered with the school's free clinic. I want to stay in Wisconsin. There are absolutely cases where EDP makes sense, you just have to weigh the risks for yourself.
