Just wondering what everybody thought. I've heard here and there that predents that interview early for a school are, in fact, considered by those schools as their top tier applicants (i.e. their #1 pick among others applying and among others interviewing later on in the cycle). Is this true? Does it depend on the school? Should the timing of the interview give you any clue at all as to your status with the school? What say you?

The simple answer is no.

The more complicated answer that I dont feel like explaining is yes.

It could be that you were one of the first files they grabbed among the massive number of files they have collected up to this point.
It could be that you obviously to them were somebody that they were interested in interviewing (not necessarily due to GPA/DAT scores). I think it is luck of the draw as much as numbers game.

Generally your interview timeframe has most to do with how early you submitted your application.
However, let's say hypothetically: a certain school calls up applicant A in November and gives them an interview date in March. That same school calls up applicant B in December and gives them an interview date 2 weeks later in January. Then it's safe to say that applicant A will most likely be interviewing for a waitlisted seat, and applicant B will be interviewing for an actual seat in the class.
And yes, this does happen - but I don't think it happens that often. Also, on a side note: there's nothing wrong with being waitlisted; there is so much movement later in the cycle & a lot of people do get off waitlists and into the class.

At every school I've interviewed at someone (faculty, interviewer, student) has made the comment that it's a good sign I'm interviewing so soon. I don't know if it applies to every school, but I feel that the earlier the interview the more interest the school has in you.

Yep, and also the earlier the interview, the more open seats the school has to offer, and the more likely you can get one of those numerous open seats.

I can speak for UCSF and that an early interview is a good thing and means you are most likely their first pick. This was actually told to me on my interview day. This doesn't mean you don't have a shot with a late interview becuase those early birds most likely have several other interviews and get several offers to choose from.

Bottom line, early interview = more likely to get in.

All the admissions stats are for one entire cycle. I wonder if they could break it down for every month ex: september how many interview/accepted and so forth.

Schools wouldn't ever do that.

I hate how Schools have the upperhand in pretty much every aspect of this process. AND I HATE getting the question "How many schools did you apply to, and what are they?".

Real answer, "it's none of your business, you only have to decide if you like me or not."

i agree with this, want to hear something else funny? I got like 2-3 questions about what grade my mother teaches and what firm my father works in?.... do you think they are trying to see if you have smart parents and good brains in the family?... just a thought

I would pay to see someone tell an admissions interviewer this!!

truth is, if you get an interview early you were probably amongst the earliest applications to be complete and are qualified enough to interview for a potential place in the class. It's pretty simple, a school receives 2000 applications, then starts looking through them one by one to pick out who they think is a good fit to their program. The best advice I ever heard was APPLY early because there are WAYYYYYYY more qualified applicants than seats/interview positions avail. If i get in this year, I will tell you guys my story.

Just tell us now so we don't have to add more anxiety to our already over-filling jars of predental stress 😳.
