Just wondering if anyone has been able to use earplugs at the prometric testing centers. Personally, I can concentrate much better, as well as understand the material much better when the only thing I focus on is the voice in my head.. Dont worry I am perfectly sane..

I searched the threads and there was a related topic with some people being allowed to use their own plugs, some instances where noise reduction headphones where given out, and some where the utilization of these items was prohibited.

I would think that with the strict regulations of what is/is not allowed at the Prometric Testing Centers, there would be a protocol of sorts for this..

I will be taking my test next Tues at a testing center that has only been operable for around 2 weeks now, and will not expect them to have the answer to all my questions, so the next best thing is to ask on here.

Any personal stories/input is appreciated..

my friend just took hers last week...she said they give you sound proof headphones...i doubt they will let you bring your own, you should try calling your prometric center

I took the DAT about a month ago. I personally hate having anything in or on my ears, when I'm trying to focus on something. However, towards the end of my exam (just when I started the QR section) this idiot next to me started typing on his computer. He was so loud that I had no other option but to ask for ear-plugs. They provided me with ear-plugs, and when the lady realized I was about to beat the sh** out of the guys next to me, she also gave me one of their sound-proof headphones. I'm telling you, I looked more like an astronaut than a pre-dental student with all that equipment. Nevertheless, it did minimize the noise to some degree. But I was so pissed off, I ended up messing my QR section.
Anyways, the point is that you're not allowed to take anything inside except you and the clothes you're in, so don't bother taking any ear-plugs with you. They will provide you with both the ear-plugs and the headphones, should you need them.

hey, for my test we are allowed to bring in our own ear plugs. this was printed out on a laminated prometric rule sheet thing, so i'm guess it applies everywhere?

I used them, I'm from Canada though so this probably isn't relevant. I personally can focus way better if I use earplugs though. If you study with earplugs you should probably write the test with earplugs.

nze thats hilar... i had some dumb*** start typing RIGHT next to me as well; I wish I coulda had some ear plugs! I was about ready to throw my little erase "fine-point" marker (more like a big-boy sharpie), and my tiny piece of laminated graph paper at the stupid crap...lol

Took DAT June 6th at a Prometric center, brought my own ear plugs (they make you remove them from the package). I ended up wearing the ear plugs I brought as well as the huge ORANGE headphones they provide. I looked like a jack***** but at least I could not hear the dude next to me failing his GRE.

Don't count on the earphones that ProMetric gives to you work for everything.

When I took the MCAT there was an alarm system connected to the front door of the place that chirped everytime someone came in and out of the place, which was about every 30 sec. It was the most annoying thing you ever knew and the phones didn't help squat.

Every 30 sec! That must have been one busy center, where you took your test:laugh:
But I agree, those headphones don't do much for you in terms of eliminating the noise.

I did the exact same thing and I didn't hear ANYTHING for the whole test.

I havent taken the time to read all the answers, but at my center, they had big headphones you cud use..i found that all i cud hear was my heartbeat with them, so i didnt use them

I took mine today (6/11/09). I studied using earplugs, so I asked for some earplugs at the Prometric Center. They also have big headphones at the computer desk, but i didn't want to be bothered by that huge thing on my head.

The testing environment was really quiet to begin with.

My friend just took his MCAT at a prometric center. He said that he was only allowed their headphones, no earplugs, and that the things were not as effective as the ones we'd been practicing with (25dB), and were fairly uncomfortable.
