Easier Getting Into Medical School!!!???

I just heard from my Genetic's Professor stating that it is easier this year for students to get into medical school. Due to the lack of applicants applying this year, more average applicants can get in this year. Has anybody heard about this or is this a hoax that my professor read about. I hope its like that the year I apply for 2005 matriculation.

Actually, my premed advisor said something similar. According to her:

Overall numbers of applicants are down, but the relative distribution of "quality" of applicants is the same. This means that top schools are going to be competing more for top applicants (read - early interviews, etc.) since there won't be as many. Also, people who were borderline in past years may have a better chance this year.

I have aslo read that there will be an estimated physician shortage of 200,000 by 2020, even with foreign trained doctors factored in. This could mean med schools willing to increase capacity soon also. Good luck everyone.

umm, the shortage is/will be of primary care physicians especially in rural areas. there have been too many specialists around in the US for a while now. that's why the government has consistently increased reimbursements to primary care physicians....so that more grads would enter these fields over specialty care.

Your sarcasm not appreciated. The shortage will be realized soon. By the time you get an MD there will be a shortage just not a 200,000 shortage.

actually, the thinking is starting to shift towards there being too many primary care docs in cities since the trend right now in insurance is shifting away from hmo plans. there was an article on aamc about a month ago about the shortages in specialties and how those coming out of residencies right now are being fought over. people in the specialty fields are starting to be in much higher demand. however, there still will be a shortage of rural docs.

I know the # of applicants is going down, but when you look at some of the stats, aren't those who are applying have a higher average mcat and gpa?

A doctor on UCI adcom said that although the number of applicants is down, the quality of those applicants are significantly greater than they've ever been...at least, that is how it is at UCI med school. Avg accepted stats he mentioned were freakin high...somewhere in the neighborhood of 11-12 MCATs and 3.7-3.8 GPAs. 🙄
