I will be applying broadly in 2018 though I have casually begun my 'application' via a word document to make the process a little easier.

In my EC's I have no lab research, however, what I do have are a couple of studies I participated in the prehospital setting as a paramedic. Does that participation constitute research?

What can I do to make myself better? I am reaching out to DO's to shadow. I have also applied to a free clinic in an underprivileged neighborhood, as well as a substitute teacher in the inner city public school system.

EMS Volunteerism (Paramedic) >800 hours
Provided medical standby at community events; high school graduations, public plays, marathons
Elected secretary of board of supervisors
Participated in 'rebranding' of agency
911 services were rendered predominately to underprivileged neighborhoods.

Paid EMS (Firefighter Paramedic) >3000 hours
Provided medical care during international bike race
Assisted with community CPR ‘Hands Only’ education for inner city youth
Performed interfacility transport of ventilated/sedated patients
Leadership experience as a paramedic preceptor
Over 3000 individual patient contacts

Wildlife / Ecotourism
Passionate about wildlife conservation with a focus on shark conservation. I have participated in various efforts to educate the general public on the exploitation of sharks and the indiscriminate fishing practices that have eradicated them from various ecosystems.

My wife and I have an annual trip that we go on to shark dive and spend hours in the water. We have dived with bull sharks, dusky sharks, sandbar sharks, and silky sharks.

Did your studies result in a conference presentation? A poster presentation? A thesis? Any sort of formal presentation or document that you can describe? If so you can count it as research. Its harder to take research seriously when you say its just some primary data on microsoft excel.

You have more than enough experience to apply to DO schools. Unless you are applying for DO/PhD programs then having bench/wet lab research experience is not necessary to have a strong DO application.

The traveling aspect that you listed should be added to the "hobbies" portion of your app.

No, they did not. I was more of a 'grunt' performing the therapies being tested on the patients in the field. I do not want to be unethical, which is why I needed to know what the parameters of research were. You helped me answer that question.

Thanks! I have been concerned about the need for research. An enormous weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

I mean you can still mention them. It's def not illegal to do so. You just need to be able to describe the aims and outcomes of the studies. The only drawback is if they ask what it culminated into then you'll just say "not much". There's nothing wrong with that. A DO school isn't an MD school and the faculty that are interviewing you aren't looking for someone to enter their lab. Most DO faculty at the pre clinical level don't even run a lab!

Nah you're fine. I have countless friends who had little to zilch research experience and of the ones that did, many hated it haha.

Then you have the exceptions (such as @mamit1001 and I) who actually enjoy the idea of pipetting for hours on end into 96 small wells.
