Perhaps thinking a little far ahead, but what are some good ideas to squeeze a good EC in during the Christmas break, considering it's about a month long for most people. Any ideas?

I'm going to staff a one week conference in Atlanta for college students in December. Maybe you can volunteer for something.

Oh gross. Drink some egg nog and bake some cookies. Spend time with your family or something - anything but pad your resume!

Sorry - I just feel like sometimes we forget that we're real people and not just psycho pre-meds.

Yes! I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. With summer research/whatever, it seems like I never get to see my family.

Well, I am not trying to pad my resume. This is a conference I normally participate in. I had a great experience previously as an undergrad - Now, I want to help staff the conference as a recent graduate. Premed or not - this conference is very important to me, and I plan to participate. The themes of the conference are an extension of values that I believe in. That is all I will say on that matter.

At the same time, you should not pursue an activity (or attempt to squeeze it in) simply to impress the adcoms. If you are pursuing an EC for personal development, then it may be worth you while, and you may not want to "squeeze in" an activity. ADCOMS will see right through you if you are trying to pad your resume.

I would just take up a hobby, or travel to a foreign country for three weeks - After all, once you get to medical school, you will have little time for yourself.

I substitute teach at middle and high schools in my former school district when I'm at home. It's like $70/day which helps pay for xmas presents, and teaching experience never hurt anyone application-wise

I'm shadowing docs during that time (about the only time during the year to do it more than once a month or less). That's in addition to work, volunteering with the VFD, and spending time with my fiancee and new daughter.

Yeah. Exactly what I was thinking. The whole taught-English-while-opening-a-bone-marrow-transplant-clinic-for-Christmas-break thing gets so old.

Worse, I hear high school youngsters are starting to do these things. The whole college/med school thing is getting so nuts that young motivated people are not actually given a real chance to live and figure out their way in life because they always have to be padding there resume with some garbage or other. It's very stifling and, ultimately, destroys creativity.

I wish there was no "tried and true" way of getting into medical school, so that people would actually do what interested them and we would no longer have little Mother Teresa's Jr.'s scurrying around the planet trying to pad their oh-so-uncreative resumes.
