I have worked in healthcare for the last 8 years. My first 6 years I was working for a large medical clinic that has internal & family medicine, urgent care and outpatient lab/xray. I worked at the front desk though. I did have to evaluate whether the patients needed to be triaged or not and had that patient contact for those years. For the last 2 years of my 8 years, I have worked in the business office doing the billing. So I got to know the CPT/ICD-9 part of it pretty well. I am currently working at an Oncology/Hematology clinic doing more of the billing portion. This is all for the same company. My question is, could I count this toward an EC since I was not actually "hands on" with the patients? Sorry, if this type of question has already been asked. I am a newer member here and just learning how this works and this is my first post.

IMO you have six years of clinical experience (the same way I got mine), and two more years of relevant employment that is not clinical but belongs on your application. Since your clinical experience is through the workplace rather than volunteering, hopefully you have community service to list as well, as this is another expectation.

Thank you so much for answering that. At this point, I don't have anything to put down for my community service criteria. How do you think it would look to volunteer for my own employer? As long as it is in a different department? I just didn't know if they would look at the overall name of the medical facility or if they would notice that the department is actually different and give me credit for it.

I suggest you volunteer in a different venue. And it need not be medically related considering how strong your background is in that already. Consider soup kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society, homeless shelter, environmental cleanup, mentoring a kid, etc. Or nursing home, hospice, mental health unit, suicide hotline, crisis nursery. Some variety would be nice.

Of course, these experiences are important and should be placed on your application; however, they will need to go under "employment." Make sure, in case you don't already, to have some volunteer work (both medical and non-medical) to put on your application.
