I'm going to become a Canadian PGY-1 and am interested in applying to the US to transfer to a different specialty. Some programs told me that I would need to go through ECFMG.

What exactly does that mean? What kind of requirements do I need to pass for this? The ECFMG website email didn't work and I couldn't find any Canadian info.

This is all despite the fact that all Canadian schools are ACGME accredited (but I didn't mention this to the program directors when I emailed them)

Thanks

You do not need ECFMG. ECFMG is for people who finished medical school outside the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. All Canadian schools are LCME accredited.

From the ECFMG itself:

To apply for ECFMG Certification, you must be an international medical student or graduate. This means that your medical school is located outside the United States and Canada. U.S. citizens who graduate from such schools are considered IMGs and are eligible to apply for ECFMG Certification. Non-U.S. citizens who graduate from schools in the United States and Canada are not considered IMGs and are not eligible for ECFMG Certification.

Hi there,
The original poster said that they would be a canadian PGY-1. This does not mean that they graduated from a medical school in the US, Cananda or Puerto Rico. This person could be an international graduate who has obtained a PGY-1 spot in Canada and is hoping to transfer to a US residency. Ir this is the case, they will have to go through the ECFMG process.
