Dear Friends,
I have a doubt regarding the ECNR(Emmigration check not required) in our passport.I hold an Indian Passport and its on the last but one page.
Are we supposed to get it stamped as we are doctors, prior to applying for the visa.
...Confused 😕

Hi pinktooth,
If i remember it right, we are supposed to have ecnr(emmigration clearance not required). If u previously had ecr (emmigration check required) on ur passport, then u need to get that deleted and get the ecnr stamped. But for usa i dont think either of it matters coz even the ecr says, "emmigraion check required for bangladesh, pakistan and all countries in europe (excluding cis states) and north america".
in what context did u think that the ecr or ecnr affect visa for doctors?

hi,
i also dont think u need ECNR.
i am also an Indian citizen and i came to USA last year without that stamp. they tell us that if you are going to USA then you dont need it, but if you are going to some other countries in their list like australia, bangladesh, russia and many more i dont remember even canada too, then u will require that.
but if you are so much confused then you can get ECNR stamp with your degree certificate within a week in 200 Rs.
but from my personal experience i can tell you that there wont be any problem.

Hi simply,
Thanks for explaining in detail. One of my cousin's who was a doctor and wanted to come to USA had got it stamped so maybe I was under the impression that Drs need to get it stamped.
Thanks Henna and Smi for clearing my doubt.
:luck:

hey pinktooth,
ECNR is required for travel mainly to the middle east. u can get it done at any passport office if u submit ur passport. it takes 15 days time and costs some 300 rupees to do.

ECNR- Emmigration Clearance not required
ECR - Emmigration Clearance required

hey pinktooth,
in the second last page of your passport is where it is mentioned about ECNR. Either " EC not required" or " EC required". if "EC not required" has been scratched off then u require ECNR. in that case when u give it to a passport office they will also scratch off "EC required" and put a stamp saying " EC not required ".

i wonder if this makes any sense but this is what they do.

if u apply for another school for f1 u have to go through the whole process again....except if u finish at least one semester in the previous school before u quit and decide to start another program. in that case u can remain on F1 status and change ur school.

I am trying to make some sense out of it

It's technically not required for travel to the US or UK, but the consulate may have a negative opinion of you/your education and not issue you the visa if you don't have ECNR so it's best to get it stamped.
