Hi. I am graduating in May 03 and am taking the April 03 MCAT. I do not have really good EC's. I did some volunteering years ago, before I became premed student (I'm a deal older than most of you youngins), and have only 2 minor research experiences, both course-related. I have no clinically-realted experiences. I go to school full time and have a family and a part-time job in unrelated field. My GPA is a sad 2.95, so I have no time really to do much else other than deal w/my home/family,study,work. Even with all A's from here on out, it won't be great. So my question is: should I wait a year or more after I graduate to work in a health-care related job/shadow a doc/research etc? Should I do a post-bacc program to boost gpa? Or should I just take my friends advice and apply next year as-is?

It sounds like you definitely need more clinical exposure. I suggest trying to get a job at a hospital during this summer and possibly doing a post-bac program during next year. Your GPA isn't stellar but I think with the balance of my EC's and higher grades on the post-bac I'm sure you will get into school. Best of luck!

Hi I am also a non-trad and I second the opinion of the above poster. Although as non-trads things can be a little different as far as things like LOR's, and ec's, you do want to have some recent clinical exposure. You also want to take as many classes as you can (upper level bio/chem if you already have all your pre-reqs done) so you demonstrate that you *can* handle the med school load. You may want to go check out this web page it is the national OldPremeds site..
