Without getting too specific, life happened and it seems like I will not be able to graduate in the typical 4 yr fashion. Will this be viewed in a negative light or flatly ignored as long as my gpa trend remains high?

Medical schools do require people to graduate in four straight years.

Not my school. Many take a research year. A few stumble academically or need to take medical leave, take the rest of the year off, and get back on the merry-go-round the following year at the same place they got off. Medical schools do NOT require people to graduate in 4 straight years.
