Help the needy....work for a longer time. I did that since 9th
grade. It really looks good if you stick to one place helping
needy. Do not change one organization to another. Stay with
one if you can. It looks good to have 3-4-5 years that you helped
needy.

I did different stuff like run marathons to raise money

Best marathons I ran were for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. If you can't run they also have marathons that you could walk.

I think adcoms do realize it is hard to raise $3000 once, but if you do it 3 or 4 times they are really amazed. Atleast they were at the schools I had interviews.

I will tell you one thing...its a pain in the ass to raise that money and it really does make you feel good especially since 70% of the money you raise through them goes directly to research and patients.

helping the needy for consecutive years shows admissions... what?

It shows that you have the drive and perserverence to commit to something for a long term period.

i feel ya... but isn't there other ways to portray that? i feel that is the first thing people "jump" to when they are trying to impress admissions.

Its the 1st thing people jump to because "helping the needy" is such a broad term. You can volunteer at:

Hospitals (any dept)
women's shelters
food drives
salvation army
etc....

The key is volunteering. If you just have paying jobs listed on your application, that could hurt you.
