Ectopic Makes it to Term

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cool. Now every ectopic we send to the OR will want a full explaination of the chances it could turn out to be a healthy baby (1:a bazillion) vs. causing death (really likely).

I swear to God - I thought this was gonna be a thread about how our collegial member 'ectopicfetus' was finished residency or fellowship or something.

Glad I wasn't the only one.

Definitely not the only ones.

I too thought ectopic had graduated or something...

I'll have to be more careful.😳

Should have titled it "Ectopic (real ectopic, not SDN's famed Ectopic) Makes it to Term."

As for the ultrasound ?. I don't think they ever had an ultrasound. This could happen here too. Most of my crack babies get born with no prenatal care and no ultrasound.

Since you guys are so literal I should point out that these aren't my personal crack babies. They are patients I see in the ED.

But Cahill said the mother had no complications or symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, and it did not show up on a scan halfway through the pregnancy. She said only 1 in 40,000 fertilizations implant in the ovary, and it is unheard of that one of those fetuses grow to full term, generally 37 weeks
😱

There is something that doesn't quite add up about the story. Did someone screw up while performing the ultrasound? Did she have a heterotopic that happened to come to term while the uterine pregnancy aborted? This story has confused me quite a bit. Anyone know of any other articles that shed more light on this story?

me too.. i thought someone was talking about my new born kid..

When I read SDS I think of sodium dodecyl sulfate, but maybe I'm too much of a nerd...or not alive in the 60s...

it's okay..me too. I worked in a lab where I had to make SDS.

oooooo...lightning. pretty

Fellow med student here, I see SDS and immediately think Students for A Democratic Society but then I was a history/polisci double major in undergrad.😛

I thought the thread would be about Ectopic's continuing career plans too.😀

getting back to the story though---I agree- how on earth was this missed on ultrasound?😱

Yeah, but they'll be asking the Ob.
You mean the OBs who yell at us on the phone for 10 minutes because it's our fault they had the bad luck of being on call when the ectopic was found? The ones who had the nurse "consent" the patient and saw them for the first time in the OR after they were tubed? The ones who provided the "required follow up" by having the patient see their NP on a day they weren't in the office? Nah, they won't ask them.

BTW we can exchange the word "ectopic" with "appy" and all the same factors apply.
