I'll have a 4 week ED rotation during my IM Intern year. Any thoughts about the Pocket Emergency Medicine Notebook? Black cover. Is it worth it or just use my Blue Pocket Medicine and save the $$?

You know what? I've never been a fan of low-use things like a book for one 4 week rotation. At the same time, I don't know about the blue book.

However, most of what you'll see is medical, and, as far as surgical/trauma, if you want to get into it (and there's an EM program where you're at), the seniors SHOULD be happy to help you get your hands dirty. Show some initiative, and you could enjoy your 4 weeks pretty greatly.

I know, but for instance, in the ED edition has work-up of vag bleed. My blue Pocket Medicine doesn't even mention it. So will it help? dont know...But your right about a book, for just a four week rotation...and I hope to get my hands a little dirty...I need some suturing and knot tying practice too!!

uptodate is good for bread and butter things like vag bleeding.

I don't know how much the books you're talking about cost, but, for size, the Tarascon EM and IM/CC books are worth their weight and cost (~$10), and you will use them beyond your month in the ED.

Another good online source for ED is Emedicine which has articles written on topics from the point of view of many specialties. The EM section is perhaps the largest, it is peer reviewed and in my experience extremely helpful. It is more concise and useful IMHO than Uptodate.
