My first rotation as an IM intern is in...the ED! So what will they expect from me? And will I really be doing the pelvics???

As a student I easily did 5-10 x more pelvics than I did while on OB/Gyn. Quite fascinating, really, since we were getting random charts rather than being given all of the *undesirable* cases.

Not the case for me.. In my 2 months in the ED as a 4th yr I did 2 pelvics the whole time. My month at Cook County I didnt do a single one because they have a separate area for that that doesnt get staffed by students.

I also did *FAR* more pelvics in the ED than in Ob/Gyn. I did a lot of bimanual exams in Gyn Surg on anesthetized patients, but we won't start that debate here!

Gosh, of the 6 EDs that I spent time in as a medical student (including 2 level 1s) there were lots of pelvics done in all of them except a very small community hospital (and that just had to do with the patient mix during the hours I was there). I was honestly lucky if I only did 2 on a 12 hour shift. Interesting that there'd be that much variation in our experiences. Maybe that means that apache will luck out.

wow i must have been a pelvic magnet. on my home rotation, I think I did one per shift, which is about 14? and then i did less in my awayrotation I did like 5 the whole time. So not that many. Then my Ultrasound rotation we did a lot of pelvic ultrasounds!! like 2-3 per shift.

I'Ok, I'll have to watch my pelvic physical exam DVD again..or maybe I can just rent some good porno..hmmm? Thanks, I think pelvics will be the least of my worries when that DKA patient arrives at 7:01 am July 1st!! 😱
