I'm matriculating this Fall and the school I'm attending offers a pre-matriculation course over the summer brushing up on basic science. It's completely voluntary and is there to access should I choose to use it.

I have been out of school since Spring 2015, so just over a year now. I think the most I'd want to get out of such a program is to refresh the basics such as scientific terminology. I wonder who among you here has taken part of one of these programs and can comment on the effectiveness of it in preparing you to re-enter the studying mentality.

Apologies for the slightly pre-allo topic but I doubt I'd find helpful answers in that forum as it is currently swamped with students losing their minds over their applications. Thanks.

You've been out of school for only a year. You'll be fine.

My school had the same thing and I didn't. Someone told me not to and I would echo their advice.

Med school is a long haul kind of thing. I wouldn't sacrifice freedom for maybe having a leg up on a test or two...You will take lots of tests. A lot of first year is things you've seen. And if you haven't, you'll manage like everyone does. Finally if you study efficiently you will have the appropriate amount of time for each test, more time with the material won't help you much. And like I said, it will only be a small subset of material you'll see first year.

The only way I'd recommend it is if you will already be in the area, have no friends or family nearby, have no hobbies, or are worried about making friends maybe? I will say that it's probably beneficial for establishing some friendships before it's such a large group of people.

Thanks for the answer. I do live in the area, but I have plenty of friends, hobbies, and travels to conduct before school starts. I guess I'll go ahead and just soak in this summer to the max instead of worrying about school. Thanks again.

Won't give you any real advantage except you'll have to spend more time than you have to in the cadaver lab. And I would advise against that ****.

I was out of school wayyyyyyyy longer and honestly, I did not need anything like that, and did very well. Maybe if you were an applicant who was out of school for 5-10 years and barely scraped by it would be useful.

Stay away from that garbage

Lol, I get it guys. I'm going to enjoy this Summer to the fullest. Beach, gym, travel, party. No ragrets.

You'll waste your time doing it. Enjoy your summer man. I know students who took pre-matric very seriously and if anything they knew a LITTLE more than the rest of us for the very first block of exams only. There is more than enough time to study everything while you're actually in medical school.
