Einstein countdown

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations to everyone who is accepted and good luck to those on the waitlist- Did anyone interview in January before the 15th? I am wondering if we are still considered for that date, because it sounds very soon, and I haven't heard anything.
Thanks for your help!
🙂 😀

🙁 Flat Out Rejected...it was my first interview and i thought it had gone well, but I guess not. I really liked this school too and was one of my top choices.. On another note, I came home expecting to find my Eintein letter and I unexpectedly had a drexel letter too aand.. it was an acceptance letter. It was a bittersweet moment. I knew it was an acceptance bc it was a big envelope so I opened that one first and was happy, but it was soon crushed by my rejection from Einstein. It was my first acceptance and first rejection on the same day. Oh well..at least Im gonna be a doctor now, an MD is an MD. 😀

congrats to everyone who got in....im still waiting here in southern cali.....ahh!!

my interviewer at einstein said that he wasn't on the admissions committee, he only writes a report on his interviewees and then the committee meets to make the decision. maybe this is why how well the interview went doesn't correlate with the final decision? anyways, sorry for those of you who got the bad news. i know this might not help much, but things will work out in the end... somehow it will... 😳

Congrats Q and everybody else.

Gracey103, maybe we'll be classmates at Drexel 🙂 Congrats on your first acceptance.

I am going to send in an additional LOR (from my current boss) and an update letter. So we'll see. Last night I started wondering if maybe the "favorably reviewed" designation is what happens after they re-review all the wait-list people in the summer. I might give them a call today to see what I can find out about the waitlist. From last year it looks like it starts moving in May.

Congratulations to everyone who got in! I got waitlisted. Now for me that is two waitlists and no acceptances 🙁 I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about the whole thing though. I still have one more interview to go on. I just hate being in limbo land like this, not knowing if I will get in off of the waitlist. Best of luck to all of you :luck:

no love for me from my first choice and last school on my list to wait for. Einstein , you made me cry. I have to re-take the mcats and apply again. Maybe they'll take me next year. *sigh* good luck to the rest of you waiting. and i'm joining the pity party with the rest of the flat out rejects.
NOw, out of curiosity, those rejected, what was your mcat score? because i think thats what killed me, but i'm not sure. i'm just curious so i have an idea if everyone had a lower mcat score, than that's what i need to improve, or maybe something else was wrong?
how about you all that got accepted? high mcat? Einstein is still my first choice for next year! *:sigh*

The problem with this line of thought is that there are so many other factors that come into play that you won't get any meaningful info from just using this one criterion (MCAT). There is no score on the MCAT that will guarantee that you get in at any school in the nation. Your MCAT is just one small part of the whole.

Have you talked to AECOM or any of the other schools that rejected you about what you can do to improve your app? I highly recommend that you do this. You may be right about your MCAT score being the problem, but it may be something else entirely (or in addition to your MCAT score) that you weren't thinking about. At least if you know what problem they had with your app, then you can take steps to correct it. But if you just guess, you may guess wrong and waste your time. At any rate, I am really sorry that you have to go through this process again. 🙁

Hey omgwtfbbq,

I've seen your posts around the boards, just wanted to say, sorry about your news from Einstein. This process is so draining, so it's really dissapointing to hear such news. Best of luck to you for the next cycle, and hopefully you will be turning schools down after you get into your top choice!

Wow...sorry to hear that. Well, if you look on the bright side (or the closest thing to it) at least now you won't be in limbo all through summer. You know what to do this year and something to aim for. FYI...I got my acceptance yesterday (31 MCAT). Best wishes to ya!

For those of you that got in, congratulations. Einstein has its definite positives and its negatives.

Hey,

Would you mind listing those positives and negatives from your experience? Also, you mentioned Columbia, did you write your LOI before or after the waitlist? What other schools were you deciding between when you chose Einstein? What made you finally choose Einstein?

Thanks so much!

thanks everybody. it IS so frustrating. I mean I can't think of what went so wrong. I have a 3.9 gpa, 4 years of biochem research, a double major in english and biochem, volunteered at the children's hospial, did sexual health outreach at my school, had an active non-medically related life writing fiction and playing piano, didn't want to be a doctor for my parents or the money,am a big believer in medical outreach, i didn't go to my interview in daisy dukes and a tube top, but had a 28S mcat score. I figure that has to be it. i can't think of anything else. even my interviewer said to me, at the end of the interview, that he could tell i had really weighed all my options and could tell I was sincere about wanting to go to einstein. I mean, other than the mcat, the only thing that went wrong was, two months after sending my thank you letter to my interviewer, I received the letter back (battered and bruised) in my mailbox, unopened and returned to sender (NO CLUE why) so, I mean would they reject you for not getting a thank you letter in? it seems extreme, but i just don't see what went wrong. I even got on a plane (my biggest fear) and flew across country for those people 🙁 *sad*

has anyone here taken the mcats twice? i do'nt think i'll be ready for april (i have a full load of english classes this semester) but august means i'll have to apply late or wait two cycles. what did any of you do? any suggestions? i'm so confused as to what to do and when to do it. I don't have pre-med advisors to talk to.

omgwtfbbq?, I really don't think there's an answer. Your application seems perfect for Einstein to me. Like I said in my PM, I know somebody with stats almost just like yours (same GPA and MCAT) who is a student there. That's why it might help to just go talk to the school to find out what they think you could improve. The MCAT may be one of those things. And TONS of people take the MCAT two or three times and apply twice, so don't worry about that. As far as the thank you note, that's almost definitely not the reason for your rejection. I'm so sorry you feel this way. I hope you have a lot more luck in the next cycle.

No problem. I do have to say that some people I go to school with may agree/disagree - this is just my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. Here are what I believe to be some of the more important aspects of med school here.

Positives:
- Incredible clinical education, as evidenced by high Step2 (test you take 4th year on clinical medicine) scores for me and all my friends, as well as being told on the interview trail at very prestigious programs that being from Einstein is a big advantage for me.
- Pass/fail the first two years. I really think that the first two years are really about how much effort you put into learning the anatomy, biochem, pathophys, etc. There is no need to have grades at that point, because you performed in a biochem class has absolutely no reflection on how good a pediatrician, ENT, neurosurgeon, etc. you will become.
- Tight-knit residential community. Although a few of my classmates live in Manhattan or other places, a vast majority of us live in the housing here - mainly because it's really really cheap and pretty nice. However, I think the biggest advantage is that it allows for very close friendships to form because of how close you live to your friends. And if you get sick of everyone, Manhattan is just a bus/train ride away.

Negatives:
- The Bronx is really a difficult place to live. There is limited nightlife, and restaurants around the campus get old after a couple of years. Trips to Manhattan and Westchester are welcome changes from the monotony of food around here. Most people will head down to Manhattan for nights out, although a lot of people stay up here and go to the local bar on Thursdays, and there are often parties thrown by the first and second year classes.
- The preclinical curriculum is heavily research-based. This means that a lecture on, for example, inflammatory bowel disease, will be taught by a researcher of IBD and may gloss over some of the important basic clinical information you need to know. This is true at every medical school my friends go to, and I think this is a major problem with preclinical medical education. This is largely where the self-teaching I mentioned earlier comes into play.

To answer your other questions: I sent a letter to Columbia's dean of admissions, who also happened to be my interviewer immediately after my interview. Then I sent about 2-3 update letters after being waitlisted. The other schools I was considering were University of Florida, University of South Florida (I'm from Florida), BU, and Tufts. I didn't want the Florida schools, because I didn't really like them, and I didn't want to live in either Gainesville or Tampa. I didn't choose the Boston schools, because they seemed way too expensive to me without being as good of a school as Einstein. I was also waitlisted at Vanderbilt, who told me I would have been accepted had I sent them a letter of intention before july 1 (when I got back from a trip to Africa). The problem was, I was waiting on Columbia to give me a final answer. I would have had a tough time deciding between Vanderbilt and Einstein because of the whole NYC vs. Nashville thing.

I hope I answered your questions. Feel free to PM me if you have any more or if you have any specific questions about what I said.

Guys,

I applied to Einstein and have not heard anything (was complete in Sept). However, several people have already received rejections pre-interview. Do you think they may be waiting for grades from this semester? Im just wondering why I havent received the rejection letter yet... argh...

I got flat out rejected and I have a 34Q on my MCATs taken once, GPA 3.73. I dont kno..I have the extracurriculars, the leadership, the clinical, the volunteer, the research. Maybe my interviewer just didn't like me. It was my first interview and i was SOOO nervous. This sucks. 🙁

does anyone know when the next batch of letters goes out? is it monthly? weekly?

Could you tell us the city of these programs that said that being from Einstein is a big advantage? Also, what specialty?

I'm with you Gracey. This DOES suck. Did you get accepted anywhere else? Or are you joining my "oh crap, i have to take the mcat again, no! why? no its been 4 years since I took o-chem!" thread. to make matters worse i got rejected on my birthday! On the plus side I still had cake.

tigress, thanks for the encouraging words

I'm applying in emergency medicine, most of my friends are doing internal medicine and peds, and they have all heard this. Most of the cities we are applying in are the major northeast cities (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and New Haven), as well as Chicago. I may have heard it more in emergency medicine, because the Jacobi/Montefiore EM program (Einstein's major program) is top ten in the country, so all of my interviewers know it well. A lot of my friends applying in California may not hear it as often, because California programs really tend to know mostly about California schools and a couple of the big ivies on the east.

omgwtfbbq? I got accepted to Drexel the same day i got rejected to Einstein, so I do have one acceptance. I still have 2 other schools that I interviewed at that I haven't heard from and 2 other interviews that I haven't gone to yet. Something would be wrong if my 34 is not good enough to get into med school and I had to take the MCATs over again. I doubt I could improve much more cuz i took the them last august and I forgot everything. 🙄
Do you dont have anymore interviews to look forward to? Keep hope cuz they are still sending out interview invites well into March. Good LUck! Plenty of people get into med school with a 28 mcat and your GPA is VERY GOOD!

No, I don't have any interviews left. I only got two, one to my state school and one to einstein. I have a secondary still under initial review at U of Mn, but its so late in the game, i doubt i'd get one for anything more than a waitlist spot. So if i don't hear from my state school then I'm out of the game. ah, what else to do. so hopefully my state school will show me some love! 😍 congrats about the drexel acceptance 🙂

This is going to be completely off the wall but I was wondering, for those who are familiar with AECOM or even go there, are pets, specifically cats, allowed in the Eastchester apartments?

I'm pretty sure they aren't.

hi everyone...

i was wondering if people who interviewed in mid-Dec. or later heard from einstein already? i interviewed in mid-Dec. and still have no news from them. would they tell me if a decision has been made if i call? i hope the mail didn't get lost... ahhh! the waiting/anxiety is killing me! lol.

Hey- I'm in the same boat (interviewed early January)-- no news yet, and have no idea when to expect it!

december 14th no news yet...

dec 20, still waiting

I interviewed Dec. 15th and got my rejection letter a few days ago.

Hi there omgwtfbbq? I got a 28 MCAT as well and I am waitlisted at Einstein. I have a 3.82 undegrad GPA, and a 3.95 grad GPA. I am getting my Masters in May. I think the MS and my research kept me on the waitlist. Also, I had an absolutely amazing LOR from my grad advisor who actually worked at Einstein. I was a little bummed when I got the news, but to be quite honest, I don't think I wuld want to live in the Bronx???? YUCK! I am all about being comfortable during the most stressfull years of my life. I grew up in Philly, and my parents live 20 mins away from Drexel, I interviewed there and absolutely loved it. To me, the only thing Einstein has better, is the reputation. Yes, the housing was cheap at einstein, but hello...THE BRONX??? But, it never feels good t be rejected, or waitlisted, it's always better to say, "Well, Thank you for your acceptance, but no thanks." A doctor is a doctor is a doctor, whether your are at Einstein, Drexel, Harvad, Indiana, or an osteopathic school. All the same stuff. People pick medical schools for a variety of reasons, I think that if I pick one where I feel comfortable and the administrators and faculty are pro-student then I'll survive with a lot less hardships than a place where students take pleasure in seeing their classmates do poorly. Anyways, just some food for thought.

Hi omgwtfbbq, First off, I have to say your username is amazing. Second, to answer your question, I think your MCAT is probably one of the weaknesses in your application (our pre-med advisors generally tell all of the applicants to aim for over 30...and to retake it until we get that score). That said, you do have a pretty high GPA to compensate for your lower MCAT, so I'm sure you'll get into a good medical school somewhere and succeed whereever you end up. Oh yeah...and I don't really think your lack of a thank you note played any major role in their decision. Hope that helps!

Beponychick,

Call them! I hadn't heard anything either, but this past Thursday I got an e-mail letting me know that it had been over a month since they sent me an interview invite, and if I didn't respond, they would close my file. I never got the initial interview invite!! I called them and am interviewing tomorrow (Monday)...

Good luck!

It's ok, my interviewer grilled me (very much in contrast to the whole laid-back einstein interview myth) and I thought I'd performed well despite the grilling, but guess not. Maybe it's b/c I told her that Einstein was in my "top 3" instead of my #1 choice. *shrug* But while I see that it's a great school and I get why y'all like it so much, it didn't really "fit" me very well - I was planning on declining anyways, so it's all good.
