hi,

I have an interview at Einstein next week, and I am having trouble getting a feel for the school. Does anyone know the grading system there (the web site does not appear to specify)? Why do people love the school (if at all)? What is it like to be a student there. If I am not interested in emergency medicine, does that automatically make Eistein not the place for me?

Also, I have two schools that I really want to go to (Columbia and Yale-- I have already interviewed at both), and I am just having trouble getting excited about any other schools. I do not want to give off an uninterested impression at Einstein, but it just does not seem as cool to me as these other places. I am trying to keep in mind that I may likely get rejected from my top two choices, and that makes other schools look more attractive. Any advice???????

As you know it's all personal but here are the plusses and minuses as I saw them:

Plus:

very supportive faculty (eg okay so no one envisions failing a year - but if you do, at Einstein they do not charge you tuition for retaking the year...)

Lots of clinical exposure.

Well known for ER (lead snake bite center)

Very well known for pediatrics (read any of Bob Marions books?)

Seemed fairly mellow, very nice students.

Dorms pretty good and very cheap.

Minuses:

most of which run in parallel with the pluses

eg students mellowness was nice but made me feel a little uninspired to 'achieve'....it's a tough balance and certainly some schools go too far the other way.

The location allowed cheap accomodations and good clinical exposure but...well...it's still the bronx you are living in and I didn't find the express bus into manhattan too convenient.

Overall I had a positive impression of AE, mainly due to the people (faculty and students), but I wasn't overly excited by the physical setting and what that entailed.

I heard Einstein students are relaxed and have a lot of free time. That's what the students at NYU were saying.

what does lots of free time entail? Anything like 3 afternoons off a week at Penn?

Does anyone know which schools are best for psych, and does Einstein make that list at all?

Thanks

oops... I am having comp. trouble. Sorry I just posted the same thing twice.

i think columbia or cornell is good for psych because NY presbytarian is well known for their psych dept. i don't know if it's THE BEST, but i know it is very well respected.

MZN-

It might be too late if you haven't applied already, but I know that Harvard is amazing for psych. From what I understand, Hopkins and Wash. U are good, too. PM me if you have any specific questions. Hope that helps.

Harvard is excellent for psych---they have McLean (great psych hospital). Columbia and Hopkins are excellent as well. Wash U. is so so (the Barnes isn't ranked so high in psych and when I interviewed there, the students told be the psych dept there wasn't too great).

What do you like best about your school?
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University
Very cooperative learning environment--students always willing to help one another. Students are very easy to get along with; no super-huge egos. Faculty sets high learning goals for students.
Have affordable housing that is nice within a two minute walk of campus.
limited class time. Low stress
Excellent administrative support for running organizations, funding trips to national conferences.
The student body is great -everyone is very friendly. Also, the faculty and staff are very supportive and available.
The students have the most varied interests and backgrounds imaginable, everyone's very approachable; we get really good clinical exposure throughout the 4 years at school, and rotate through the most diverse hospitals of this and other communities. Lots of opportunity for research. Awesome housing arrangement.
Being in the Bronx allows you to gain experience with a patient population that is enormously diverse, and the school helps provide opportunities for us to learn from these patients. Students are very involved in community outreach, and we even have a student-run free clinic. We are encouraged to go summer programs in Latin America to learn Spanish to better communicate with patients.
students, eduation is good

What do you like least about your school?
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University

Located in safe but boring neighborhood in Bronx; Manhattan 30-45 minutes away by public transportation. Some faculty are excellent at teaching, while others should stick to research.
The buildings look dreary.
Library, study spaces
The Bronx!!!
Not much financial assistance, other than federal loans, is offered but education is expensive. However, there is not much paperwork we need to be involved in, the financial assistant does everything for us.
The libraries are closed for the Sabbath, but there is little other study space for people who still choose to study then. Fordham library, though beautiful, is too far for students without a car, and the few conference rooms fill quickly on exam weekends.
administration is not student friendly. No real advocacy for student needs or requests. Dean of students inadequate.

Please share any other thoughts you may have about your school.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University

The Bronx has many colorful characters that keep the area very interesting.
I recommend Einstein
Don't let the fact that Einstein's an affiliate of Yeshiva stop you from applying. It's a great school and you really don't feel any different here than you would anywhere else, the atmosphere's very good. Plus, you get lots of vacation time in your first year. Again, great teaching staff and research opportunities are plenty.
Einstein students are very relaxed, and this makes medical school much more fun than I ever thought it would be!
you will learn medicine, but many leave with a bitter taste

hey Yogi,

thank you v. much. Could you post that link again? It did not work for me. Or could you just type it out and I will cut and paste. I have a Penn interview this week, too, and I want to check out what the survey says for Penn. Thank you.
