I am very grateful to be able to choose between these two schools, both of which I would be happy to go to. Some info on me: I grew up and went to undergrad in SoCal, and am very interested in research and academic medicine (esp neurology). I understand that pedigree is important for this so that is a big factor for me, but it looks like Iowa and Einstein are the same rank on US News. They’re also about the same price so that’s not a factor (no scholarships).
Iowa
Pros:
- Faculty and administration were very nice and really seemed like they cared about the students
- Feel like I would get along with most of the students there: all seemed friendly and cool people
- Strong home departments in optho, ENT, possibly neuro as well?
- Could have my own apartment: I like living alone but having my own room is acceptable too
- Beautiful campus and facilities
Cons:
- Match list doesn’t look that great and seems focused on the Midwest (this is kind of a big deal as I would like the option of doing residency on the coasts, but the priority is matching to a top tier academic institution)
- Research distinction track looks appealing but they don’t have an MD/MS track like Einstein
- Iowa City seemed nice but I think I would get bored (like I was at my undergrad); I would also not like to stay for residency
- May need a car to get around
- Graded pre-clinical years (don’t think this is a big deal, at least not for me)
Einstein
Pros:
- Better known nationally than Iowa? Not sure, but if so, this could help during the match
- Match list looks pretty good (really like the NYC matches)
- In NYC! Am excited to live here, but I also know that Einstein is in the Bronx which kind of worries me as far as safety and accessibility to groceries goes
- 5 year MD/MS program in clinical research
- Great vibe during interview day: really liked the school and New York
- P/F Unranked
- May not need a car (I could be wrong though)
Cons:
- Did not get to meet other faculty besides my interviewer, so no idea how receptive they are to teaching and doing research with students
- Students all seemed really happy, but I personally didn’t connect well with any of the students that I met
- Apartments look ok but I am worried that I may have to have a roommate (I absolutely need my own room- if assigned a roommate I will have to rent a place off campus and I am not sure if this is possible)
