Is anyone else having problems with this? The chapter will review something, say, cellular respiration and meiosis, then I'll get a question from a passage that requires me to know what T-helper cells are? I understand I might need to know that stuff eventually, but what's the point in quizzing on it before they even teach it?

Confused? 😕😕😕

In my opinion,

That's exactly the kind of thing you will see on mcat. Like you read some random passage and then you see some info that you may not really know at the top of your head. I pretty much am doing problems and content review from EK biol and then I'm going to do random passages in the EK 1001 instead of doing them in order because I feel like that's kind of cheating. I like the opportunity of the passage questions to tap into my random thought process by not doing the passages in order (ex. do number 3 then 50 then 24 etc.) because that's how the mcat is going to be right?

When I see something that seems unfamiliar or is stuff that I haven't really reviewed over, I just sit there and really think about what this piece of information could mean before I actually look it up so that I can exercise my critical thinking skills as much as possible. Sometimes, I go as far as making it up so that when I see what the right info is, I get to slap myself in the face. (Yeah, I go in front of the mirror in my bathroom and then WAM!) Hey, my lazy self has to learn this stuff "somehow" right? lol

It looked on the site like you just do the corresponding lecture's review with every third question.

dundun - but it doesn't seem like there are really any clues to point you toward the right answer. it's just - know this.

This claim is false, sorry to say. The lecture book chapters and the EK 1001 problem book go in the exact same order, I mean just look at the table of contents of both books side by side, they are in the same order. Questions within the book in the corresponding chapter (EK 1001) may diverge off topic a little, but I mean, in no MCAT Passage are the writers going to focus solely on Mitosis and not ask you to bring out your Meiosis and Embryology knowledge at some point in time, ya know what I mean.

ah yes loveoforganic,

I really hate those.... I really really hate those stupid 'just know this' stuff. I see this in TPR science workbook as well where they bring up really stupid out of the blue stuff for you to remember in the explanations. Some of them are stuff that you need to answer the question too which disturbs me. However, I feel that if it's just completely outside material, then I would ignore it or just say "hm... ok cool" and move on not dwelling on it too long. But, if it's sort of related to a topic that I know I should know, then yeah I would just know it.

I realize that the mcat is going to have foreign material (because it's frankly a reading exam) and I think the key here is to recognize the boundaries of the basic stuff you need to learn but then realize it's also helpful to go beyond these boundaries and learn a few things about other things that are sort of related to topics in an application way. This boundary would require you to recognize that even though you read something completely foreign, you know that basic concepts are being tested somewhere in the passage.

Hm... I wonder if I'm straying from your point.....

"dundun - but it doesn't seem like there are really any clues to point you toward the right answer. it's just - know this."

OK i'm thinking here.... that you assume the 1001 questions are more mcat format which they are not. They are more supplemental problems that actually test your content material not really mcat testing conditions.

what ya think?

I guess I could agree with that. After reading the replies to this thread, I'm just going to expect to get some that there's no way I could answer and not get disheartened by it. Going to start using the EK 1001 for bio more like a second set of content review than just a test of what I've learned.

Hey guys, first time poster here. I was doing the EK 1001 questions and realized that I had the 1999-2006 edition. I've heard of a more recent edition, 2007, which looks similar to the cover of the 101 VR passages that we are all accustomed to seeing.

I was wondering if I should get that latest edition instead of the 1999-2006 edition. Either way, I can't seem to find that latest edition on ebay, amazon, etc...

Please let me know if it really matters and if the older edition is similar to the AAMC exams.

Thanks
