Anyone thats preparing or taken MCAT, do we need to know index of hydrogen deficiency formula? how important?

Also for Orgo groups, how badly do we need to memorize groups like Nitroso, epoxide, Enamine, Oxime, Mesyl and Tosyl groups, Gem-dihalide and vic-dihalides, Alkoxy and so on....in the EK book it says not as important but still need to memorize them, what you think?

wth is index of hydrogen deficiency??

for the groups, just recognize them, not need to memorize them.

(2n+2)-x/2 where n is # of hydrogens and x is # of carbons

Other way around.

C2H4

2(2) + 2 - 4/2 = 1 unsaturation.

Also a cyclo compound counts an unsaturation, sometime i was surprised about when I first found out, though it makes sense.

Very important! The gem/vic and tosyl showed up on my real MCAT. Easy points that you shouldn't miss because you didn't memorize simple nomenclature.

my ochem professor was obsessed with diols. i didn't really care for ochem that much while i was in ochem. but after ochem, i cared a lot. and now i realize why they're so important (protecting groups).

TosCl - Toluene sulfonyl chloride, memorized that one. can't remember EXACTLY what it looks like. but it is specifically on the AAMC topics list. preparation of tosylates and mesylates.

anndddd..... i edited that for you in case you want to edit it too so that AAMC isn't all up on you.
