EK Physics NOT working for me

Does anyone have any alternate study aids or sources for MCAT physics. I just cant seem to get it with the EK Physics book. (A little background: I took physics 6 years ago in undergrad).

Also is it just me or are the answer explanations in the EK 1001 physics book crappy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

The best source would be TBR physics and also there is NOVA physics but I would rather go with TBR due to passage practices.

Hey man I am in the same situation as you. I took physics 6 years ago and will be taking the mcat in Jan. I have Kaplan, EK, and the Princeton review books. I found TPR to work wonders on physics concepts that I had either long forgot or never learned in the first place whereas EK assumes you learned the stuff reasonably well in the first place and Kaplan is just awful in general.

So my vote is for TPR. Just got it at Barnes and Noble.

Thanks Emericana, I have TPR books from 2004 I wonder how much the content has changed?? I also have kaplan books.

I might also try TBR if I can find the books for cheap 😉...

when I took physics in undergrad I conquered the hell out of it then promptly forgot everything I studied...I hate physic ugh!!

The content hasn't changed to any great extent so the 2004 books are pretty good. However, our newest books (the ones you can find at the bookstore) have additional practice passages and questions in them.

I agree. TPR books rock if you need an in-depth review of the material, with some example questions in between to strengthen the concepts in your head. It's great.

Passages are key in whatever materials you choose. I know the majority of people at this site recommend BR for physics (although this thread sort of seems like an exception so far), and that's because the answer explanations are really good. They not only cover the material in the question, but they approach it in a POE mindfame, teaching test tricks along the way. That's the main reason people who have used multiple materials recommend BR above all other materials (at least for chemistry and physics). You do most of your learning on the practice questions, so top flight explanations are key to your success.

The only problem is that even used BR physics materials are expensive. Brand new it is $60 for physics from their website, but you can always resell them for $50 to $60 (that's what they sell for at SDN classifieds). The fact that they sell used for so much speaks volumes of how great people think they are.

Look at the SDN classifieds section to get an idea of what else is out there. Like Ghayoour said, there are some who really like the Nova physics text for learning the material.

NOVA was great. i was actually fine with TPR because after going through that, i was able to follow EK. NOVA on the otherhand teaches the fundermentals and concepts and makes you understand those seemingly trivial concepts.

OK cool. I actually have the 2010 edition but noticed that there are no passages in the book. So I guess I need to also buy TPR the in-class science workbook as well?

Actually the link he first posted is the book they are giving now with the course there is a post around here explaining that the only books that remained exclusive to the course are the 2 workbooks and the in-class book the rest are now available trough bookstores as separate topics.

The TPR subject books at Barnes are the same as the hyperlearning series. I have literally gone to the store to compare the 2. I think the TPR books are awesome for relearning and TBR is great for reinforcing the harder concepts. TBR passages are hard as h*ll. I tried using just TBR and considering that I haven't had physics in 8yrs, didn't do so hot. TBR review doesn't start assuming you have zero knowledge like the TPR books do. So, my vote is for using TPR and TBR.
