Should we focus a lot of attention on these? I'm using TBR and the passages are quite tough about bulk and shear deformation and stress and strain.

I agree. But do you think BR passages are a little over the top?

BR is definitely more difficult than it has to be sometimes, but it is really beneficial to you to try your hardest on everything that is presented. BR will prepare you for the "WTF?" passages so get past feeling overwhelmed and try your best to learn what you can.
