Hey guys,

I'm interested in pursuing a PM&R residency in the future, and my first rotation of third year is an elective/selective. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice for a rotation I could choose that would help me to build my knowledge base so that I could be ready for an Audition rotation later in the year? I was thinking about choosing neurology, sports medicine, or orthopedics. Thanks a lot!

First rotation of third year? I suspect you'll be too busy figuring out your place as a medical student to really benefit for an elective toward the end of the year. At your stage the way to shine in any audition rotation is three-fold: show up early, work hard, and do the work asked of you. The grades in your other rotations will serve as a clue to how teachable you are. Audition rotations are about showing you will contribute to the team in a positive way.

Building your knowledge base is done at night, with a book, going over things you saw that day.

Any of those 3 rotations you listed would be good. But I agree, having it as your first rotation isn't the greatest luck.

I would go with Neuro. But agree with others above. Focus on excelling in school and rocking step 2. That will matter more than an audition.

If you want to impress on a PMR audition...work hard, be where you are suppose to be at the right time, be a team player, and know anatomy/neuroanatomy. If you work the rehab wards in your 4th year...show that you are competent at managing basic medicine Ward stuff.

Good luck.
