Anybody have any advice for what to do with elective time? What did you do that was great, what made it great, and if you could do it again, what would you pick now?

My program had average US experience at the time, so I went somewhere it was great for a month. That was time well used. I used my second elective to go to Guatemala on a medical mission. Also a great experience. I'd do both again given the opportunity.

I went to Chicago and worked with toxikon group for a month. The rotation was fantastic as there were daily learning topics and the discussion between specialists and review of the Illinois tox cases was phenomenal.

I did a month at Phoenix children's hospital in the PICU, which was really exhausting but great learning. Wonderful cases for learners...thoracopagus twins, Waterhouse friedricksen syndrome, lots of heart kids, great neuro / neurosurgery cases...great teachers and better weather than Minnesota

I did a month at Shands Jax doing resus. It was okay. Regular supply of sick folks but on my rotation the teaching was sparse and of generally low quality but it could be an exception rather than the rule. Met some cool people though.

I did some intramural electives too in radiology, ultrasound, etc. likely you will have access to these in your own shop. If not come to ours it will be great

One vote for oral surgery. You get really good at dental blocks and at draining dental abscesses.

I did legal medicine. I worked for a med mal defense firm for a month and did chart reviews. I also got to sit in on depositions and court room cases. I had a co-resident who did dental and swore by it.

I did forensic path in "The Big City," in medical school (not residency). It was amazing and horrifying. I have some great stories from that rotation that I really want to post. The sites smells and details from that month are so vivid I remember them like it was yesterday.

I didn't want to do anything that anyone else did, as they all seemed so pedestrian to me. I did a month of complimentary and alternative medicine at one of the least liberal, most skeptical places (Duke), where they didn't drink the Kool-Aid, if that is even possible with CAM. It was a great month.

Hey that's the exact rotation I'm doing now! I highly recommend it, especially as a post-match victory lap.

I haven't even been on a rotation since match. The Atlantic ocean has been my victory lap
