Hello all. I thought it would be useful to have a thread about away rotations and what people thought of their experiences. This might be a useful way to do it (feel free to omit or add as you see fit):

as a side note, does anyone know how to get info on electives at Wills? i have had no luck with their or Jefferson's website.

I applied for an elective last year which I did not end up following through on. I initially made the mistake of applying through the Jefferson Medical School Registrar - don't do that. You should call Wills directly and explain that you want to do an away elective and they will send you their own elective application. Once they accept you to away rotation, only then do you complete the Jefferson Medical School paperwork. If you're serious about doing an away there, start early; their electives fill up quickly for obvious reasons.

intense learning experience with a steep learning curve.
how were you treated: pimped constantly
if you already matched, did it help or hurt you?: HELPED A LOT
easy/hard to find housing: Easy. craigslist.com
easy/hard to find way around clinic/hospital: easy.

where: Wills Eye Hospital
when (month): October
avg hours: 700-5:00 M-F
split of clinic/or: 2 weeks Eye ER/2 weeks service rotations
got letter?: yes x 2.
malignant/benign: VERY friendly, the best eye hospital in the country.
how were you treated - great time/ pimped a little
if you already matched, did it help or hurt you?:HELPED A LOT
easy/hard to find housing: easy.
easy/hard to find way around clinic/hospital: easy.

avg hours: 8-5 Mon-Fri, lecture daily at 7am
split of clinic/or: up to you...usually 4 days clinic, 1 day OR
got letter?:
malignant/benign: benign...attendings very friendly
how were you treated: great time, very laid back, pimped occassionally but very educational
if you already matched, did it help or hurt you?: n/a
easy/hard to find housing: easy, dorms on campus and lots of housing around hershey
easy/hard to find way around clinic/hospital: easy
what general advice did you recieve about doing audition electives: work hard, show up on time, lecture is optional, but recommended. Be friendly and get to know the attendings.

What should one lay stress upon ?
How difficult is it to get a letter.

i would love to help you out with some info, but i have not done an elective at wills either. i was looking for some info on doing electives there myself! contact wills directly tho re: electives to sign up (not jefferson first).

where: New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
avg hours: 7:30-6:30
split of clinic/or: you are free to spend time in the clinics or OR
got letter?: no
how were you treated: both the attendings and residents are very nice
if you already matched, did it help or hurt you?:
easy/hard to find housing: hello!! NYC
easy/hard to find way around clinic/hospital: yes

i think the program is great, residents end their training very well prepared.
but, the days are VERY long. MANY MANY MANY patients, which is great because you'll see almost everything ophthalmology has to offer, but they have clinics saturdays.

i loved the program but didnt rank it because there is no time for research or free time (studying, etc.)
