Currently (over the next three semesters) I will be taking the science pre-reqs for med school but I will have some time take other courses if needed. I'm just asking for those of you already in med school, are there courses that you took in undergrad school that weren't requirements to get into med school, but are very useful to you now that you are in med school? (I have a bachelors in art so I've taken just all the art courses offered at my school (not that those will be very useful to me in med school) and I was interested in psycholgy and criminal justice so I took a couple of them).

Thanks!!

I took a developmental psych course that helped me with my Behavioral Medicine class this semester. Also, I took a one credit Medical Terminology course that helped with both clinical work last year and school so far this year. Some schools don't require Biochemistry or Anatomy for admission but I would strongly recommend those, as they both have helped me keep my head above water.

With that said, none of the courses I stated above are MANDATORY by any means. It all depends on how familiar you want to be with some of the material you will see in your 1st year of med school.

Also, certainly don't be afraid to take some electives that *gasp* aren't in the biology or chemistry department. Take a CJ, philosophy, English, history, whatever you want to. Sometimes the non-science courses are what keeps a person sane, especially in the push to graduation...

If it were me I would take microbiology and biochemistry, the latter actually being required by KCUMB. I took physiology and anatomy which helped some. I would disagree with the behavioral science classes because those tend to be much easier than the hard core sciences where the more exposure the better.

Of course these aren't required but it takes me repeated exposure before things actually make it into my long term memory. You only get two years to learn a butt-load of crap before you're tested on boards.

My advice - if you have free hours (meaning your pre-reqs are covered), take classes outside of the fundamental sciences. Never again in your life will you have the kind of time you have now to learn about something outside of your regular life. As dj said, take a class in poetry, wine tasting, great American novelists, whatever.

Either way, just enjoy your time.
