Haven't looked at this thread since it started, needed a break. Coming back, I think this thread has left me more confused that I was from the start

My entire goal is to try and provide some input on this matter. I have good experience analyzing data and interpreting conclusions.
Guess you're not as good at analyzing data as you thought if you don't know what n=15 at the top of a graph means, lol. And yes, it essentially does mean they gave it a 0. They were asked to rate its importance on a 1-5 scale of importance and it is so unimportant they didn't even rate it.I'm not sure where you're getting 15 respondents? There's thousands of programs that participate in the survey. Poll lus, that doesnt mean they gave it a zero out of 5, but rather they choose not to mention it.

For all specialties, it's 94% of 1,233 say step 1 is important with an average rating of 4.1, and 60% of 1,233 say AOA is important with an average rating of 3.9. Using my 0 method, that's Step 1 @ 3.9 across all 1,233 programs and AOA @ 2.3 across all 1,233 programs.
I didn't miss out, I actually "clinched" a spot. At my school, you need X amount of honors points to be eligible for it, which I already met. There was literally nothing in that response that said you were right. It varies widely by program and selection criteria vary as well so it is the furthest thing from standardized. Regardless...didn't you say you missed out on AOA? So why in the hell is this a big deal for you when you literally aren't in the group you're supposedly obsessed over. Have a nice life
It doesn't mean they thought it was unimportant, but rather just didn't come to mind
Don't go twisting this on me. They were asked to think of the most important characteristics, and AOA just didn't come to mind. A bit crude, but it's like asking someone what their favorite foods are. Just because they don't mention something doesn't mean they don't like that foodThe survey has these things written on it, it doesn’t have to “come to mind”.
NO I'm not. This isn't even my thread. Enjoy memorizing first aid, we'll see who's the better doctor. The one that memorized a fact book, or the one that actually tried to pay attention in her classes so she could be a good doctor and do well on rotations

But her patients will be so much better cuz cuz cuz... cuz AOA ok??I’m not twisting anything, I said it earlier in the thread. It’s a form with those factors on it, I’m sure I can’t be the only one here who has seen it with my own eyes. It’s clear you’re not changing your take on this and that’s fine.
I’ll add that nothing you learn from first aid or from class will make you a good doctor in my opinion. Work ethic, efficiency, and people skills are what separate the average from the great clinicians. Knowledge will come with experience in the field whether you want it to or not; how your patients feel in your care starts day 1 with how you work and act.
I mean in fairness, the same could be said about your passion to Step 1. Like I said, according to my school online database, I'm currently eligible to receive AOA, just need to stay with it. When I have it, I'll be sure to send a photoBut her patients will be so much better cuz cuz cuz... cuz AOA ok??
I think this is going to sound meaner than I actually intend it to be, but nobody here actually cares if you earn AOA or not...Like I said, according to my school online database, I'm currently eligible to receive AOA, just need to stay with it. When I have it, I'll be sure to send a photo
Wait I just looked at this again. Does being eligible = getting it in my context? All the website says is 1/8 of students are eligible for consideration and are selected after the proper verification and profile analysis? What does that mean?I think this is going to sound meaner than I actually intend it to be, but nobody here actually cares if you earn AOA or not..

I talked to the assistant dean personally and he said based on my grades I was almost a sure fire. He liked that I was one of the few that came to his class despite not being mandatory. I don't understand why they would try and hide that, and make it seem like I was going to get it.There’s no standardization in induction. The society’s only rule is how much of class can be inducted. School chapters decide how. Ours is pure academic, others use academic cutoff and consider community service, it’s a mix.
You misread my point. I said this because NOW I'm worried that it's not just based on grades at my school, but rather leadership or ECs. I literally have done nothing but study. I don't think I've been to a social event once, let alone run clubs or get to know the deans.Do you want a cookie? Congrats on getting it. Really. But saying things like this makes it seems like all you want is an ego boost. Step 1 is more important by all objective data /thread

being eligible does not equate to being nominated to AOA. The AOA bylaws state up 1/6 of the class can be nominated, and up to 1/2 of those can be inducted in their junior year. The definition of eligibility varies from school to school. At my school, and many others, the top 1/4 of students are "eligible" to apply for AOA, though only 1/6 of the class may be inducted per the national bylaws.Wait I just looked at this again. you should also know that at many schools, most of what is considered for nomination to AOA is clinical grades and step 1 score. I was part of the selection committee at my school to select the current junior class, and basically the only thing that was really discussed was 1. clinical grades (every person nominated had all clinical honors grades), 2. Step 1 score (every person nominated had >250), and 3. preclinical grades (basically an afterthought but was still brought up for a few candidates). I think these factors are probably pretty prevalent for AOA selection at many schoolsDarn this is kinda stupid
My school doesn't consider step 1 at all 🙁 Thoughts?you should also know that at many schools, most of what is considered for nomination to AOA is clinical grades and step 1 score. So basically, step 1 is a MAJOR factor in AOA nomination, so its very difficult to separate the two

But how do schools know how to differentiate the real AOAs vs the ones associated with step?Don’t say that you’re going to melt his brain
they don't. hence why AOA is less important...But how do schools know how to differentiate the real AOAs vs the ones associated with step?
Don’t say that you’re going to melt his brain
glad to be of serviceThis conversation took an unexpected turn
But how do schools know how to differentiate the real AOAs vs the ones associated with step?
LawyeredThey’re both real. We have arrived exactly at the reason Step is the one uniform objective measure we have.
luckily AOA is step prep but yeahFine I give up. You guys win. But what do I do now??? I spent all this time focusing on AOA. Should I transitiom to step prep?
If you have been doing well in class, making the transition wont be hard. You are an M1, you should continue to focus on class. M2 you should incorporate step prep into your work for class work.Fine I give up. You guys win. But what do I do now??? I spent all this time focusing on AOA. Should I transitiom to step prep?

PM'd you to talk further. I just don't know what I'll do without my competitive drive for AOA. Sometimes I think it's made me a bad person. 1 time me and my friend got out of a test, and I knew she did well as me, so I started to say things about questions that I knew were wrong answers, and she got upset! thoughts? I really like having the feeling that I did better than someone I guessJust keep learning material and when you get to M2 (assuming you have it at the end of M2) get First Aid and a non-UWorld qbank to practice during the year. Get UWorld in the second half of the year and transition to that so you don’t waste it, it’s the single best prep tool. Personally a huge fan of Boards and Beyond videos for during M2 along with systems and Pathoma for Dedicated as a fast review. Take practice tests only during dedicated, earlier they’re no help and only discouraging because you won’t be ready.
Tons of good advice and study strategies on the USMLE forums here also depending on what kind of learner you are. Be flexible and don’t overload yourself with resources, there are many more options than one person could possibly use. Feel free to PM also so we don’t further derail this thread, I’d be happy to help.

I'm just a super competitive person. I guess I was so fixated on AOA because the idea of being at the top of something excites me. I have friends that that I know deep down are studying 24/7 and trying to compete with me, and I just want to win those battlesHow are you not a joke account
