So I was on an interview and someone mentioned this forum. Kind of cool.
In regards to the EM/IM, I am interviewing at 9 places. While I am not the most stellar applicant, I am concerned of not matching as the amount of spots are small. At the respective combined programs, I only applied to EM/IM places and not their concurrent categorical EM program since I am only interested in doing EM/IM. People are advising me to use EM as a backup. Any thought takers on this one?

The beer tip of the week: In 1612, Adrian Block & Hans Christiansen establish the first known brewery in the New World on the southern tip of New Amsterdam (Manhattan).

You have to ask yourself if things don't work out had you rather 1) have a match in EM only or 2) be unmatched and scramble/do a transitional year in something. The answer to that question dictates what you should do.

Also, it is probably too late to get any EM interviews, as most places closed applications after Nov 15, some going later, some going earlier.

I am in a similar boat regarding my interest in EM/IM programs, though I would be perfectly happy doing an EM residency and applied to it as a back-up/other option. However, at many of the EM/IM programs I applied to I applied only for EM/IM because I am not particularly interested in doing EM only at those locations. However, while I was on an interview at one of those places, the PD for the straight EM residency stopped me and recommended that I consider sending in my application for EM for that program as my EM/IM interview there would count as an EM interview for him (since I ended up being interviewed by 4 members of their department). That may be an option for you at these various programs as well. I would look into it.

After mulling options over, I am interviewing at 9 EM/IM places. I saw on a couple of posts that the magic number to rank is 10 for categorical EM to be compeletly sure of matching. Should I interview at 10 more places to assure that I will be matched?
