My pre-dental friend who works in the research lab with me just got an email from Indiana telling him "your GPA is too low for consideration- if anything changes in December please update us. Do not send anything else." (not exact copy of email). Wow. He took it pretty hard. He says he has a 3.0 but I am not sure if he is "rounding up."

Have others out there had anything similar happen?

Was that 3.0 overall or 3.0 science. Because a 3.0 overall (not always) a lot of times indicates that the science GPA is slightly lower. If their cutoff is a 3.0 science then it makes sense.

I thought schools usually ask for the processing fee and then tell you after if your gpa is too low.

Based on my limited experience, I can say that no two schools are the same. My gpa is sub 3.0 and MCG is working with me. I'm doin post bac stuff, and they'll base admission on my gpa plus my improvement during the post bac. So I guess some schools will work with you and others kick you out the door without consideration. Purely a numbers game. 👎

What was his DAT score?

19 AA but I am not sure PAT... probably 19ish as well.

Many schools will just cut you off if you have below a 3.2-3.1 something like that. Examples are Indiana, Case, Temple, and many more.

Sometimes, but not always. Some do a cursory review of your application, and if they decide the like what they see, will press you a fee so that they can process your application.

So if a school mails/emails you saying they are ready to get the processing fee from you, is this good news? Does it mean they like what they see so far or do they ask everybody for it. For example, Tufts?

So these schools will not ask for a processing fee? And if they do I should be happy?

Case and Tufts both asked for a fee last year. Case sent a rejection letter less than a week after the check was cashed and Tufts waited until May to formally send out a rejection letter.

Very few schools will actually even look at your application until you have paid them in full and turned in all of your stuff. There are exceptions but they are definately not the norm.

I am not sure if any school takes the time to look over anyone's application and email the applicant to say whether they think if their GPA is high or low. OP's friend must have emailed the school and asked for their opinion. something most of us do.

I am not sure if he wrote them. They just said he was not a stong applicant and did not request a secondary fee.

I just got a letter today from Indiana requesting the secondary fee. This particular letter was extremely personalized compared to the others that I have received so far. I have no doubt that the original posters friend could have received an email letting him know not to send in money. My particular letter told me which classes I still needed to take and when they wanted me to complete them before admittance could be granted. They even had them seperated by semester in pen (not printed) how I had them in my AADSAS application. I still have to complete my last physics lab and a physiology class that I will have finished by next friday. I'd say that's pretty personalized.

From everything that I have seen and heard rejection letters are not very personalized. I know quite a few people that got rejected and all their letters said the same thing...raise your GPA/DAT score...even though the applicants and higher GPA's and DAT scores than the schools average. I think if you don't fit their mold of what they want at their particular school you will receive the generic rejection letter.

I sent my app fee when my aadsas was mailed out. I have not heard anything from Indiana. I spoke with a lady from the school and she was very nice. But Indiana is not really one of my top 5 schools. My wife doesnt want to live there. (she wishes there was a school in Vail Colorado! haha)

If what's written in the email is correctly told here, then your friend must be telling a big fat LIE.

i personally know a girl with 2.8 GPA and just got matriculated at Indiana dental school.

A 2.8? Is her dad the dean? 30 DAT scores?

I don't think Tufts asks for a fee.

she graduated from UCLA as Biology major, so i guess the dental school took that into consideration.

Her DAT scores were pretty good actually. She scored 19 on PAT and well above 20 for AA.

Yeah... so i guess it's true when they say dental schools look at everything

did you get an interview invite with the letter as well? i got a similar letter 2 years ago when i applied there. It listed all the pre-reqs that i has completed and those I still needed to complete. Along with the letter also came an interview invite. I wouldnt worry if the invite isnt in there yet... they said they might not send invited till mid/late August.

Well, I don't think your friend is lying because I got the same email today saying they won't interview me unless there is changes. I have a 3.35 overall and 3.42 science. 18/19/18 on DAT... I am very disappointed also but I guess I just don't have what they are looking for. I will retake DAT again and send in new scores. 🙁

That's really harsh. Your scores seem ok to me.

That is way harsh on Indiana's part.

Temple will tell you their average GPA in the entering class is 3.1, but that they have no specific cutoff, as undergrad schools grade differently and there are plenty more credentials by which they judge your application.

I know a guy from a very competitive school with a 2.8 that got an interview at Temple with DATs around 18 and someone with similar DATs and dental experience from Boston College (grade inflation city, even the guy ranked 75% in his class has a 3.15) that didn't.

Some schools actually generate those e-mails by computer with no regard to the rest of your application. In the end, you can't really blame them considering the sky-rocketing number of applications in the past few years. However, Temple doesn't use their system that way and there's rarely a single factor that you will get turned away for.
