Are you guys receiving decline letters from dental schools via email? I've gotten one from MUSC as well as Louisville and I find them extremely tacky. I mean I've paid enough to apply to your school and the best you can do is send out a mass email? Anyone think this is pretty sorry on the school's part?

i agree it's pretty cheap-o. felt good to send louisville a rejection letter right back tho! lol.

definitely... i didn't even get that much from pitt... just denied on aadsas a month ago without a letter or e-mail

Got that same "AADSAS only" rejection from ASDOH. I don't care much though.

At least you get that closure. Some schools don't even reject people at all. You just never hear back from them.

R you serious?? Man that could be my fate then, coz i havent heard anything from marquette even thou i think their class is already ful.

Last year I never heard back from at least 4 schools, all of which charged me 30-75 dollar application fees. I'd like to think with that kind of money they could at least afford postage, paper and ink. E-mails wouldn't be a big improvement either, its just not respectful to the applicants.

you wrote them back? hahaha what did you say?!

Temple sent me the email of doom. I was upset too, because it's like - I paid you $$ and you can't even buy a 41 cent stamp to send me a nice fancy rejection letter? At least Maryland sent me a physical letter. Temple I guess doesn't update AADSAS because my status there has always been blank but Maryland's changed to rejected, then disappeared for a few weeks after I got the snail mail, then came back as rejected ... so they rejected me twice I guess haha.

Still under review at Pitt & UMDNJ but I hear UMDNJ is horrible at correspondence (and one thread said it's full already) so I'm taking that as a 'rejected!' Praying at this point for a Pitt interview. Or at least a nice fancy paper rejection letter

We complain when acceptances are not sent out promptly at 12.01.01 am Dec 1. Some complain of receiving acceptances by snail mail. At least for some schools, the application fee apparently doesn't entitle the applicant to either a postage stamp or a Hallmark sympathy card. E-mailing is possibly more cost effective especially when dealing with 500-4000 applicants. Forwarding the rejection to the sender may be a novel idea, but they may not be looked upon too kindly for the next application cycle. Rejections are difficult to deal with no mater how they are packaged. It is time to accept reality and make alternative plans.

I received a rejection from Michigan last year. It was an email that simply said download the attached file. It said "Dear applicant" (not even my name)... I thought it was very tacky. The least they can do is pay the small postage to send a personalized letter, even if the news is bad news.

I got one from Colorado yesterday. Two last year. I don't really care how schools send out their information as long as I get something I am ok. Like people have been saying some schools never say anything, so an e-mail at least shows some effort.

They didn't even really send the letter but told you to dl it? What's up with that? 😕

Yeah... not very professional in my opinion. It is good to hear something from the schools you applied to, whether good or bad... but responding to applicants in that way doesn't really encourage someone to apply there during the following year, assuming they haven't been accepted to another school already. I think some schools can definitely work on their professionalism... and as someone stated that it is more cost-effective to send emails, you are correct... but the least they could do is put my name on it. But then again... these private schools have so much money anyways, I think they can probably afford the 41 cent stamp for every applicant they do not accept.

I'd be ok with them throwing a brick through my window with a simple note attached saying, "You suck, WTF were you thinking applying to this school. Thanks for the money now drop dead loser!".

Atleast then I'd know! 😀

Not hearing anything back is just downright wrong. If the schools have the resources to process your secondary application fee, then there should be some formal rule that they also MUST inform all applicants who paid a secondary fee of their application status. Just my .02.

Not applying to a particular school for the next cycle because they didn't send a proper Dear John letter should certainly teach them a lesson.

lol. nothing crazy, just to the effect of, "Thank you for letting me know, i supposed i should have withdrawn my application a while ago; i will be attending VCU this fall. Have a nice day."

i thought it was great how louisvilles rejection letter had teh subject "From the University of Louisville School of Dentistry!" with a nice exclamation pt at the end only to find out i was rejected once i opened the email

yeah, i would be happy to receive an e-mail from a few schools. I haven't heard anything since they cashed my app. fee check. Come on! They could at least have the decency to let us know where we stand!

Thanks for your amazing insight!!! 👎

Uh, OK bootstraps. Try to remember when................................

I mean being rejected or accepted is beyond the point. The point is we are applying to a professional program and we SHOULD expect to be treated as professionals or at least potential professionals. Imagine if this was the norm in the business world, just ignoring people you don't want to work with or sending a big client an email explaining a somber situation. It wouldn't fly and it shouldn't here.

The biggest problem is we as rejectees have absolutely no real say in this because we will always look like sore loosers. Most every school requires you to pay a $40 application fee directly to the school. I think they can spare the $.70 worth of office materials to send out a real rejection letter. I bet they don't email the students the accept (I know they overnight a UPS letter at the school I'm applying for). It's just a poor business practice.

Some things are great for email but business and potenially life changing materials are not!

You're correct. Arrogance by professional schools is becoming more rampant. Interesting, since we are supposed to be empathetic professionals.

What do you mean "we"? It says your an optometrist. Besides that, I don't care if it's an email (really, why waste money on someone you rejected? They don't care about that relationship much). I would just like to know. I wouldn't say no to anything that would end the interminable waiting.

I think 'we' means anyone in the health services field.

Anyone else get the e-mail rejection from Colorado last year? The subject line read, "NO THANK YOU!!" Pretty tactless from a school who stresses they are a top ranked academic institution.

Your comments come off as incredibly rude and quite frankly, you seem to be a "little miss know it all." Maybe it's just your online tone (as you may be a very sweet girl in person), but I've just noticed that you are quick to bite people's heads off when they say the wrong things. The guy who stated "we" is speaking of healthcare professionals as a whole, so please get over yourself. Anyway, I'm merely an "SDN lurker" and felt compelled to make this my one and only statement. With that said, you will probably never see a post from me again. Tah tah :hardy:!

I'd rather get an email rejection than a thin envelope. It's immediate and reduces paper.

Being accepted or rejected is the whole point. We would not be having this post if the magical word "accepted" had been part of the e-mail. One suspects that for the present protagonists, a rejections letter would been received with equal disdain because the size of the letter was 4 x 6, instead of the 4 x 9 or the more formal 9 x 12. The MO for, at least part of the business world is "don't call us, we will call you."
As for the school using UPS to overnight a letter may be real but is it limited to to those accepted or do the rejections get equal treatment? This gripe session is starting to sound like a case of woulda, shoulda, coulda. Yes it would have been nice, should have been done, and could have been handled differently, but the fact remains, that the schools chose not to. If there was failure in their conduct, maybe we should be the ones to start acting professionally and move on to our next phase in life.

Anyone else sick of this douche? 👎

well, i wouldn't put it quite that bluntly, ....but i'm not feeling like i need to 'move on to our next phase in life' over a rejection email. i guess i would feel a lil more sensitive if i had ONLY been receiving rejections. i don't really care too much that i received a rejection email vs a letter. it's not like i'm going to frame that letter....it would only end up in the trash so i guess they helped save a tree by emailing.

with acceptances, on the other hand, it's fun to have an official letter, in addition to the speed & convenience of an email.

Seriously you guys should be upset about being rejected and not about the method of rejection. While I admit that some of the subject lines, email contents, etc are a tad bit unprofessional, an email in itself is not. Not this day and age. Welcome to the 21st century.

Many schools use email to alert candidates of acceptances. The big reason for sending an actual package, envelope, whatever... is that there is paperwork to be filled out. That, and people like to get that stuff in the mail.

I doubt someone would be thrilled to show their family members a rejection letter.

And on that note, email is probably a bit more confidential. People who live with you could be handling your mail.

So yeah, try to chill out a bit and be glad that the schools at least told you about it now instead of dragging you along for the ride only to get rid of you in June. Most people who set their minds on this do get in at some point. You'll all probably be looking back here in a year or two while dealing with annoying wax-ups and preps and basic science finals.

I don't think the rejection or acceptance by email is horrible. Its fast and effective. Granted I agree you paid them $40 so you should expect something. MUSC, for instance, communicated with me thoughtout the process via email and later rejected me via email as well. But I felt that I was at least getting what I paid for. Whereas, some schools, like Pitt, just left me hanging. I think it's really tacky and inconsiderate for schools to attempt to let the AADSAS status say it all.

well last year I was getting very outraged about the emailed rejection letters, however this year I am all for them.

I used my home (not college) address for my application. I did not want to rely on shady campus mail for important documents.

THe plus side: I received all mail addressed to me.

the minus side: my parents were the first to receive all my "thin envelope" rejections.

So the few schools that emailed me the rejection letters saved me some potential embarressment. The email is private and no one but me knows I have been rejected to X school.

Hey! Louisville changed my aadsas status to "rejected". That's the first I've heard from them. My status was never even "recieved" or "completed". Thanks Louisville!

Agree ! Reject is reject, is it important by email or mail? As long as they notice it as soon as they have final decision; then, we don't have to wonder. However, no response is really not professional at all.

I like hearing from a school as soon as a decision is made whether it be a rejection or an acceptance. Official, tangible papers are nice to support interview invitations, or acceptances, but when I get an email that says I've been rejected I know to just cross that school off my list and not spend any more time worrying about it.
However, when I was rejected by Baylor I thought it was very nice of them to follow up a few weeks later with an invitation in the mail to join their post-bacc program.

Nova is so disorganized they sent me a denial letter with someone else's name on it, before my application was even complete! So I called to find out if they were trying to deny me or this other person. They told me to disregard the letter, and a week later received a denial with my name on it along with threatening letters for not paying the fee. Reading this site, however, reassures me that I am not the only person to have witnessed Nova's unprofessionalism

Hhhhhh, I got a rejection letter in August 2007 and I applied in Oct 2006. Almost a year later. What the HELL? I totally forgot about this school!

I got one today from UNLV.:meanie::laugh:

I sure did, it caught me off guard!!!! at least it was quick and simple.

Received one from Michigan today...

yep.. I got a decline from Michigan today as well :-\

is columbia one of the schools that never lets you know? i'm intending to withdraw my application but a friend suggested i just not bother since their application cycle is almost over (through march) and he believes i've effectively been rejected by having not been granted an interview yet.

does NJ act the same as columbia; no official rejection?
