Hey guys, Some dental schools reccommed taking embryology (developemental biology, cbns 169) and I have signed up for this class for winter quarter. I really dont want to take it because I have seen all the lectures, videos, etc. the professor has put up already and its wayyy too muchh!!! I need some advice from you guys on whether I should take this class or not. Why do dental schools reccommend this course???

Or instead of taking this class, I should just spend the time that I would have dedicated myself to this class on studying for the DATs?? I plan to take it in the summer sometime.

personally, i hated the course. I took it because I thought it would help on the DAT, but the dev bio on the DAT isn't anywhere near as bad, and it was my worst grade in bio. I wayyy preferred even biochem to dev bio.

So do you suggest that instead of taking that class and wasting time, I should just spend time on studying for the DAT??

I vote take it... We powered though or embo text in 4 weeks. I could not hurt.

The same goes for physiology and anatomy.

I personally disliked embryology and my professor did not make it any better either. I also don't think that studying for the dat now will do you that much good if you plan to take it in the summer. If you can, try taking a business class. That will help prepare you for the real world and for things that dental school might not teach.

I would take a different class if you have the choice...if you're a bio major, you'll be prepared fine for the dat, so don't even worry about what class you take. take a class you're interested in, and that you'd do well in. and like turner said, you probably won't need to study for the dat from now...it usually takes people only a few weeks to study, so i wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks for the geat advice guys. I have dropped that class and picked up Computer Science 10, which is an intro to programming class. I am interested in computers and stuff and it also counts as a related science course for my B.S.. I am into computers and technology a lot, and if I take these types of classes for fun, how will dental schools react?

i think that was a good decision....i took engineering classes for fun and it gave me a lot to talk about during interviews. so props to you

I personally hate hate hate embryology, and am SOOO glad that Buffalo doesn't have a whole class in it. (We do a lot in gross, and some in other classes like histo.) As for the DAT, I don't remember there being much on it....I think that taking classes that will be your biggies in dental school would be a better bet, like histo, anatomy, physiology, biochem, etc.

Another note: I don't think that there being a lot of stuff in the course is a good reason to drop it in itself. The best thing you can do to prep for dental school is by challenging yourself as much as you can academically so that you know what you're doing when you're overloaded with 10 classes, all equivalent to 500-level undergrad bio courses. Only drop it if you don't feel you can use it...not because you don't want the challenge.

Good luck! :luck:
