Hi, guys, I get two offers, both are emergency doctor
I did general intern last year and failed match this year. I am interested in surgery, but surgery is very competitive

one is specialist center, firmed salary , but have surgeon I am interested in , and location has a veterinary school. If I want to continue to match ,there may be good connection and network.

other is emergency clinic with GP, with signed on bonus, the doctor will become shareholder if you do great job.

I am wondering which is better

some doctors told me I dont need to surgery intern or residency, I can go to do continue education and get some experience.

BTW,I have family to raise and am bread provider

both clinics salary are same if we consider living cost

thanks

You will do more things (a greater variety of things) in the emergency clinic as opposed to a specialty center. That would be my choice, but I am not someone who wants to do a residency so that will colour my opinion.

If your end goal is to still pursue a surgery residency, then I would choose the specialty hospital. It will definitely help your application next year to have great LORs from boarded surgeons.

Did you apply to surgery internships through the match this year? I am also pursuing SA surgery and my understanding was that it's near impossible to match to a surgery residency going a "non-traditional" route (ie. rotating internship + general practice). Most people I know went through a rotating internship and then one (or more) surgery internships if they didn't match to a residency immediately.

echoing what ss said above - specialty center will likely be looked on far more favorably. I too have heard it's extremely hard to get a surgery residency without multiple internships (which absolutely stinks).

I have heard that, too. On the other hand, two of the surgeons I worked with just did a SA rotating internship, and one of my classmates is starting a Sx residency after just a SA rotating internship. So it is definitely possible, and must not be THAT uncommon.

Our 1st year sx resident at NCSU (when i was in clinics) also came out of a rotating internship, so i'd agree that it can definitely happen. IDK. I hate that specialization is headed in the direction of multiple internships and fellowships and selling the 1st born and the likes. I'm glad that the field i'm in hasn't headed in that direction nearly as much and I certainly wasn't going to do an ER internship if I didn't match.
