For any current students at Emory, what do you think of the housing at the Clairmont campus? Do you recommend finding a place to live off-campus, or is the higher rent at Clairmont worth it for the convenience of being able to get to the main campus easily?

As a past Emory student in undergrad - the housing is like 50 years old. Rusty water, the noise level is high. Off campus if you can afford it in one of the post apartment complexes are the best. In the Virginnia Highlands area, you have really good stuff and really sucky stuff. So be careful. Don't go south of Ponce or too close to little five points. Do go north of campus for better stuff. Stay away from the stuff by the VA hospital. Look out for stuff in Decatur area. The police in Decatur are not Emory friendly - matter of fact I don't think they are friendly to anybody they love to ticket you. By the way traffic is not the problem on and around campus and around the school - parking is. Ride a bike and have a good lock.

There has been a mini discussion on the Emory class thread about housing, but Clairmont isn't too bad. Granted, the room is a bit small compared to apartment rooms, but the grad section is separate from the undergrad section. Also, Clairmont has an amazing athletic center, which is good since you won't really have time to go work out if your apartment doesn't have one. Unfortunately, since Emory is revamping the shuttle system over the next couple of years, timing of everything will be different from the way it is now. There are ideas floating around about providing shuttles to satellite locations that are a little farther away from campus. Is parking included in graduate school rent? That might be why its a lot more expensive than the apartments since Emory is jacking the rate up to $600 for the shuttle improvement crap (GPS/wireless/etc). Anyway, if you can find a place off-campus, that is great, if not...no biggie, Clairmont isn't bad at all.

Hey, I'm an undergrad at Emory, so I can shed some light on the situation. Clairmont is NOT 50 years old. Other freshman dorms on campus are that old (but they're renovated of course...but that's no the issue at hand). I would really try to avoid Clairmont if you can. It's REALLY expensive compared to what you can get near campus. You do get parking included with Clairmont, but it still doesn't make up for the exorbitant cost. My girlfriend is starting there in July 🙂D) and got a really nice place across the street at Highland Lake for a great price. Plus, if you live at Clairmont, you have to move out at the end of every academic year. That's no fun. I lived in undergrad Clairmont housing (very similar to grad housing) and while it's fairly new, it's very basic, very "industrial"...i.e. rugged appliances and furniture, not very nice, etc. If it's any indication, a friend of mine who is a rising 2nd year said only about 10 people live there in her class.

hey if anybody needs to move into a place beginning of july, i am trying to get out of my post renaissance studio apt a month earlier than my lease! (moving to mcg in augusta.) if you live in a studio, you can save money compared to a 1 bedroom, and this place is well maintained, in a good location for atlanta/emory, and still 600 square feet with a huge closet, full bathroom and kitchen, deck.

it is right off of north ave on central park place road, next to a gables apt comples, another privately owned condo community, behind sci-trek and civic center. great tennis courts across the street, publix & krispy kreme is a hop away, and also whole foods/borders shopping plaza is 5 minutes away(lots of med students study at the borders.) it is a short drive from emory, easy access to i-85 and grady & crawford long hospitals (where emory students do their rotations) are only 5 minutes away!

also very close to virginia highlands, midtown, and downtown decatur where all the cool people hang out. 😀 (help a girl out so i don't have to pay double rent money in july!)
