Can anyone tell me how competitive you have to be for a general surgery residency at Emory Univ (i.e. range of board scores, grades, research, etc.)? How substantially does doing an AI at a school help? Does it make a unattractive candidate (on paper, based on objective criteria like board scores, grades, etc.) all of a sudden seem like an attractive candidate to residency director? Thanks for any help/input.

visiting rotation means next to nothing unless you 1) blow the PD or 2) blow the pd. sometimes being the most stellar student they've ever had on service gets you a leg up, but if you're below caliber with regards to step1/2, grades, etc. the AI there will do nothing but get you the obligatory interview.

You gotta be pretty damn good - this is one of the stronger programs in the Southeast, along with Duke, Vanderbilt, and the like. An away rotation would definitely help IF you shine - and that's a big if. As with many powerhouse programs, a poor showing during an away rotation will kill your chances.

Let me know if you have more questions. (Don't use the PM function, doesn't always work for my account.)
