Emory Vs CWRU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hard to judge because both are equally prestigious. I would choose Emory because it's close to home and nice weather.

emory cause its in the A-T-L...

I would choose case because I didnt apply to emory.

Emory just stole CW's president from under their noses 😳

Emory > CWRU

Emory

Atlanta is much better than Cleveland, and it seems as if Emory has more resources. More organizations are based in Atlanta, and it seems as if Emory has more money to do things with.

Though CWRU has its good points, Cleveland Clinic is probably one of the top 5 medical centers in the US, and the new Lerner SOM should make CWRU even better in terms of research.

Just my 0.02

Cleveland Clinic gets around 60 million in NIH funding + 44 million from industry. CWRU gets about 174 million and doing the math, that's around 234 million in total NIH funding. The new partnership between Case + Clinic is something they really want to work on and strengthen. In fact, for those who are interviewing at the Clinic, you need to be accepted by both committees to get into the Clinic program. So, that's ~60 people voting on you: 40 people on Clinic Adcomms, ~20 people on Case's!

P.S. For ranking based on NIH funding, check out:

Heh, Harvard Medical School ranks 23 in NIH awards to Medical Schools.

I think that doesnt count Harvard's affiliated hospitals however.

For the record, Emory got our interim president. He left after we hired our new university president who also happens to be an MD.

Nope, but with Harvard's affiliations, Harvard's NIH funding is close to a billion.

Here are my impressions of the schools...

I know many Emory med students. They seem pretty stressed out, don't seem to get much clinical experience early on, and say that the professors, though very nice, are pretty stuck in their ways and the curriculum is not very progressive. However, Grady is one of the best places to get diverse clinical experience and all the students seem very happy about that.

My impression of Case is that it is progressive--case based learning, early clinical exposure--and tends to lean towards students with interesting experiences and ideas about medicine. I don't know any students at Case though.

I would say that these two schools are comparable in their reputations (though I have been told by a prof from Emory that Case is better), so I'd say it just depends on what type of experience you are looking for.

(If anyone has firsthand knowledge about Case, I'd love to hear it!)

if i were you i'd decide on which curriculum fits you better. from what i know, they are quite different.

I'd choose case b/c my biochem professor was visiting from their med school department. There's not real rationale here.

I chose Case and here's why ...

I knew the new Dean of Medicine (Horowitz) when he was at Yale, and he's an amazing, inspiring man who is really going to take that school to the next level ... and he has a very positive supportive cast

Case got the fourth perfect ranking ever given on their most recent accredidation

Their match list for the last few years is freaking ridiculous! 99 % passed the boards on their first attempt last year and their average score is 9 points above the national average (which is alot)

I have friends at Emory, and I agree, they are not very happy individuals ... while all I encountered at Case seemed to enjoy themselves

You have total flexibility your fourth year -- you can go anywhere, so if Cleveland sucks, you're only stuck there for three years ... I lived in Atlanta for a few years, and it's not really the Shangrila that many make it out to be, and gets really tiring after a while

hope I didn't proselytize too much

i would have to agree on the case comments.....it is pretty non-competitive, pass-fail and in general students are cooperative and happy. in all, i'm thrilled to be there. the curriculum is very well developed and they are constantly adapting it to better prepare us. plus, student feedback is an important part of the evaluation of each committee, so if something bugs you, you can let your opinion be heard.

i have known people who moved ATL-->CLEV & CLEV-->ATL. the latter seem to be happier with the move. ATL is not the greatest city ever (esp compared to NY/LA/SF), but it's closer to cosmopolitan than CLEV in my opinion. ATL is also home to the Centers for Disease Control & American Cancer Society (...CNN, Coke, Delta, Turner, Braves...)

location is one thing. and curriculum is of course another.

i'm sure you'll have a great education either way. good luck.

That's not true. I just came back from interviews at both programs, and I specifically asked about this issue. The decisions are independent--some are accepted to both programs, some to Case alone, some to CCLCM alone.
BTW--Case is really high class. The new dean is from Yale, and he is really interested in taking the school in radical directions. (new logo, "new" name--it's Case School of Medicine now--new curriculum in the works--one very similar to the current CCLCM curriculum...) Students seem to love the school, and are particularly excited by the prospect of doing rotations at the Clinic. (i don't know if they could do rotations there in the past. I do know that in past years, OSU students could come up to the Clinic, but I don't think that is the case now that the Clinic and Case are partnered)

Emory > CWRU

Correction, Emory just hired CW's INTERIM President Jim Wagner. Repeat Jim Wagner was acting President of CWRU. One could interpret that as he was only good enough to serve in the capacity until they hired someone more suited for the job. Who knows...

President Wagner brings an engineering background to a school that doesn't have an Engineering School. Wagner was recently quoted as saying "one of the great recent joys of my career has been to work hard to understand scholarship in areas outside of the sciences and engineering." Very interesting match for a liberal arts college. However, I predict a positive change in Emory's future. I believe he will make good on his promise to make Emory a household name like Harvard, Yale (his 10 year goal).

i agree - he's already done more on campus in the past 3 months than Chace (former president) did in my previous 3 years here. our contract with a publicity firm runs out soon...we'll see if anything changes as far as the reputation goes. it's unfortunate that hardly anyone outside of Georgia or Long Island has heard of Emory

Thanks, too bad we wont be classmates since you're destined for columbia. Me, the chances I'll be at case are extremely high. 🙂
