Hi! Apologies if this topic has already been covered...

From current students and alum, any honest insight (both positive and negative) into Emory's global health MPH program (particularly any thoughts on the Community Health and Development concentration)?

For those that have applied, why did you or did you not choose to go to Emory?

Thanks!!!

There must be some thoughts out there on Emory in terms of global health... 🙂

These are the main +/-s I've heard so far...
Cons: expensive, few scholarships
Pros: many opportunities at the school and in the Atlanta area
Any other perspectives???

What is the general atmosphere among professors and students?

How does it compare to schools such as Johns Hopkins, University of Washington, Columbia, and Tulane in global health?

I'm hesitant to post because my experiences at Emory were probably very different from others but since no one else has chimed in...

I have an MPH from Emory - in Gobal health (community health and development) actually.

I enjoyed my two years there. I learned a lot and I feel that it has given me a good foundation to start working in public health. The pros you listed are what I was told and what I saw others experience. It is very important to network with professors who are working in your area of interst early and often.

Unfortunately I missed out on this as I was working 30-35 hours a week as an optometrist while going to school full-time. Your networking with faculty will lead you to you summer expience as well as your thesis topic and give you a leg up when looking for that first job.

I can't speak to the issue of scholarships but to the issue of expense...

It is expensive. I don't know how those who borrowed their way through are making ends meet at low paying entry positions. I was lucky enough to be able to work enough to pay my tuition without having to borrow money.

Professors are generally very open. Very student friendly and want to see each student succeed and go on to make a difference.

It was a great school for me and I would do it again.
