a friend of mine is considering getting EMT-B training but he works 9AM-5PM and he's concerned about whether his job will interfere with the class. He'd take a 3 month class in the evening which works out schedule-wise, but I've heard that there's a lot of memorization involved and he's concerned about studying time. But I don't really know if what I said is even true.

Should he do it? Where did you do your training and was it extremely intense?

thanks!

Usually it's not that intense. There are those who have trouble with the class, but usually it's quite do-able on a full time job. Tell him to make sure he keeps up with his reading (and read the chapters BEFORE the lecture). Spend ample time with the NREMT practical test checksheets.

Your friend should have no problem. I just finished my EMT-B training in NYC at Emergency Care Programs. The classes met twice a week for one semester on Mon. and Wed. nights 630-10 pm (which was really more like 645-945). I was also a full time student (18 credits) and had a part time job (30 hours/week) while taking the course. After the first couple of weeks, where you have to learn anatomy and medical terminology, there's not much more memorization involved as the coursework naturally lends itself more to hands on practicing of emt skills.
