I'm going to be looking for work as a EMT-B very soon in the LA area. I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to which company to aim for.

Pay is going to be a factor, I got to pay bills and what not. But what I really would like is a company that has good employee moral.

So far I've look it AMR, Gerber, and Schaefer.

I want to do 911 calls but I'm not sure if I'll get a choice, does anybody know how that works?

Thanks,
Gene

I don't know what kind of calls you're looking for but I did a ride along with the folks at West Med and highly liked it. Nicest people I ever met and they had a decent station or well X-box game room, haha.

I believe only fire departments go on 911 calls in LA County.

By the way, I'm also looking for an EMT position. How long does it take to go through the entire application/training process before you can actually start working?

I used to work for amr in ventura county(just north of la). great area with amr covering all 911 calls with bls fire backup.really nice stations including one on the beach
in la also check with goodhew (if they still exist) and shaffer(they back up la city fire and also do critical care transports)

In the county, the LAC FD responds paramedics and private companies do transports. In the various cities in LA county, there are different combinations - in LA City, the FD transports themselves (in either paramedic or EMT-B ambulances). Non 911 transports (ALS or BLS) can be done by privates.
