Hello,
I have been lurking here for quite awhile and finally made an account. I just have a couple of questions regarding my EMT class grade and research.
I took an EMT Basic class at a rural university a year ago. It was over the summer from 8am-5pm every day of the week and it got really old after awhile. Once I realized I only needed a C to pass the class and obtain the certification, I made the mistake of slacking off and ended up with a B in the class.
I am at a four year university now, and have a 3.91 GPA in Biochemistry. The EMT class was an 8 hour class. How much will the B I earned in my EMT class at a lower tier university effect adcoms first impressions?
Also, I had a question about research and how the difficulty of the research effects the application. I am using my certification now to work with the medical director of EMS for the State of Oklahoma. He is also an ER physician. This summer I have assisted the doctor in three research projects, helped rewrite and update the EMS protocols for the OK Depatment of Health, and shadowed the doctor in the ER. The research is straight forward. The projects I have assisted on include training EMTs with the Tulsa Fire Dept. on how to use a novel device that just captures 12 leads and how well they remember their training. We are trying to see how well EMTs can use this device (compared to paramedics who use LifePacks which cost around $20,000-$30,000). Our hopes are that rural departments with only EMTs would be able to use this device to send 12 leads to metropolitan hospital ERs. Another study I am working on is seeing if new sirens placed on ambulances have actually reduced wrecks.
Long story short, the research I am doing is not as in-depth as, for example, genetics research or something like that. I am, however, going to be on the publication with the doctor. My question is, does the difficulty of the research play a factor in the application? And would my certification be put to better use doing volunteer work for the FD?
Thank you. I am sorry for the lengthy post.
