Hey guys first of all I am sorry if I am posting this at the wrong place I am new to this site.
I am entering my second year of undergrad this fall and am going to take on Ochem. It is currently one of, if not the hardest course at my school (UGA) and I know it will be very time consuming. With that said, I am very interested in obtaining an EMT-B as soon as possible because my long term goal is to get into PA School. Most schools require 2000 hours of patient care and I need to hop on it as soon as possible. Keep in mind I am not into EMT just for PA; It seems like something I would really enjoy and I will be able to see if medicine is really for me. My dilemma is that I dont think I can take on EMT classes with my workload. I can take it next summer but I want to do it sooner. I was thinking Spring because by then I will be prepared for Ochem 2 and I wont have to worry about football season lol. Do you guys think Spring is possible? Also, how hard will it be to find a part time EMT opportunity while being full time pre med? I appreciate any advice to help me create a clear path for my future as I am very lost right now. Thanks!

This probably isn't the right forum for your question, and it should probably go in a different forum, but I'll give you my advice.

EMT-B course if stretched out so that it is 2-3 hours 2 nights a week should be no problem for you, even during Organic Chemistry. When I took the course as an undergrad I found myself spending maybe an hour outside of class to study and/or prep for the practicals. I had a lot of fun being an EMT-B while in undergrad. Too much, actually, and so my word of caution to you is to not get so caught up in it that you let your grades drop like I did. As far as employment, it is entirely dependent on your area, and volunteering would probably suit your purposes better as far as a more flexible schedule, etc. Just don't let it get in the way of your studies. I was able to get a little leeway with a few assignments here and there from professors because of what I was doing, but you shouldn't expect the same treatment.

Short version: It is entirely possible, as long as you balance it properly. Bad grades will drop you out of the running for schools way before lots of experience will make up for them. Best of luck to you.
