Not quite halfway across the country for my USC interview. I have met applicants with like 7-10 interviews that are traveling multiple times a week.

NYU had a round of interviews this past Tuesday with at least one other round on Sept 1st.
 
VA NY is doing a round of interviews this week and a round of interviews next week.

Buffalo and Stony Brook both emailed out interview invites approximately 1-2 weeks ago (respectively) and are interviewing candidates next Tuesday, 8/18/2015.

I got interviewed at Pacific yesterday and got accepted this morning. Best of luck for everyone

On my CV I have listed three or four journal publications. This was brought up on my interviews as something that was unique and stood out. None of them were dental and one or two were abstracts only- it didn't matter much. Think of the CV as your foot in the door to the interview, so you want it to stand out- realistically they are not going, tracking down the full text of the article, and analyzing the content.

Also, be a member of AAE. As a student it's only $75 and can be put on the CV. Also I was asked straight up on two or three interviews if I was a member. You don't want to answer no to that question. Extra points if you can say yes, and also quote an interesting article that you read in the most recent JOE.

Go on externships to a program or two. Also goes on CV and shows genuine interest.

I have only 1 published abstract (dental related) from a 2 year research experience, but a bunch of research presentations and awards. I didn't bring up research in my interviews too much in depth. I was asked briefly about my study.

A TON of shadowing, about 10 endo specialists, a hand full of other specialists and general dentists. 2 externships- 1 endo related at a program i applied to and 1 mixed through alpha omega fraternity. I feel like showing the programs that you are really interested in the field should be a big priority.

High class rank and GPA. Not too much volunteer/outreach work. Traditional recommendations came from research mentor and 1 endodontist. PPIs came from dean of research, dean of clinic, another endodontist, a general clinical faculty and a prosthodontists that I worked a lot with in clinic.

I was not asked about my actual experience in endo, nor was presented with a case. I was never asked if I was an AAE member.

I think what set me apart was my non-dental related awards. I'm a classical pianist, artist, and amateur photog and I examples samples of my playing / drawings / photos.
 
As fate would have it, there is an article in the current JOE which surveyed endo residents and what they thought of the application and interview process. What are Endo programs looking for?
Candidates that are passionate about endodontics and that are able to withstand and excel in a postgrad program.
They want people that can answer the question "Why endodontics?".
If you think on the golden circle the most candidates can tell you the "How they got here" and "What they achieved till now" but only a few can tell the "Why a postgrad endo program". And that answer doesn't come in internet forums or books.

What can set you apart rather then GPA and boards?
GPA and Boards only serve the purpose to match between recent graduates.
If your CV is a blank page saying you have a DDS, sure a great GPA and great Board score will look good and make you stand out from other recent graduates.
The question is: Who are you competing against for the spots? Surely not only recent graduates.
What really makes you stand apart is the way you built your CV. Past Endo programs, endo related peer-reviewed publications, past clinical experience, past research experience, anything that shows how committed you are to the specialty in the past years.
You can have the best GPA and have ranked 1st, but your blank CV compared to a low GPA/low ranked candidate with a proven track record of commitment to the specialty, its worth very little.

What does average endo applicant profile look like?
Nowadays its a mixture between recent graduates and mature experienced candidates.
Honestly can't tell the %'s but that was my perception.
I applied only to one school and on my interview day there were 5 experienced mature (over 35yo) candidates and one recent graduate.
But again, it was this one school specifically and it might not be the best example of the applicants profile nationwide.

Hey, I go to NYU and applied this year. The last thing they told us is that there is one more set of interviews in September and after this they will review all the students they interviewed and make a decision.
