does anybody want to suggest certain endo programs and provide your reasoning? Thanks

I am from east coast and I heard Tufts, UCONN, Marquette, VCU and einstein medical center are some good programs for different reasons. Tufts has up-to-date equipment, UCONN has a good academic program, Marquette is two year masters program, VCU has no tuition and cheap living, and you get paid at einstein medical center. any thought will be appreciated.

i like marquette bc i went to school there....but u should be realistic. once ur certified endodontist it doesnt matter what school u got ur training from. so my suggestion is go to vcu no tuition.... why add debt. most people dont learn that debt is modern day slavery.... lol seriously go to vcu if there no tuition like like a businessman why pay when it being offered for free. the money u save can be applied to your future practice.

I see you're from Maryland which has a very well-reputed program also.

I know two people who have gotten into and went to tufts for endo. Academics and scores were average. Both are excellent bs artists so maybe the interviews went well.

That being said, tufts does seem to be costly for d-school so I would go to the side of free at VCU if I could choose.

Maryland has a strong endo program. The only down side, I hear, is the research component under Dr. Fouad.

Many residents moonlight as "general dentists" doing endo in private practice, making very good supplemental income.

I have a buddy who just graduated from Endo last year and he is still kicking himself in the head for not staying a general dentist. Everyone does the easy endo and he does 8-9 tough cases each day. He does excellent work, but not sure he will stay in it. I do want all you guys to go specialize in it though because it is true... All the small mouths, gaggers, complainers, tough to access, deformed or curved roots, apico's with a lingual nerve that will most likely cause numbness, etc. are all coming your way... And I love not having to do that crap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that the point of being a specialist (especially an endodontist) -- that you take the more difficult cases that general dentists can't or don't want to handle?

God bless endodontists - never have to touch another one of those damn distally tipped 2nd molars! Also its a VERY stressful and tough job. Much respect for them.

can't agree more 👍

does anyone else want to talk more about pros and cons of different endo programs? 🙂

If I could have my pick of the litter, I would choose the VA Hospital in Long Beach, CA. Here you will get paid, there is no tuition, and the patients don't have to pay anything. You're going to have a difficult enough time as it is. Easing the financial aspect of the scenario would be a great help.

I am also interested in their program. There are other programs that pay the residents such as Einstein Medical center, UCLA, etc., but I was wondering if they ever choose fresh grads. Do you have any idea?

I have no idea. I'm just saying if I could pick any one program that's the one I'd pick.

Einstein and UCLA might pay you too but I bet the patients still have to pay for their procedures. Not at the VA though. Just think of how many experiences you will be able to have when there are no financial barriers to care.

That's true. Thanks for sharing.

Hi folks,

Anyone know about the Georgia Health Sciences Endo program? I looked at their resident profiles and it seems like everyone is from Georgia. Also, anyone know of this kind of trend with other schools where they take mainly their own?

I went to an Endo conference and I heard someone ask Dr. Buchanan what program he recommended (I was standing right behind him when he asked). Without missing a beat Dr. Buchanan responded "any program that teaches you how to place implants."

Not sure what program does that, but I think Loma Linda and a few others do. Hope that helps.

anyone hear of interviews yet?

I submitted my PASS application on 6/29 and sent supplemental applications in the first week of July. I haven't heard from any schools yet. I think we are still early in the cycle. Did you hear back from any programs? When did you submit your applications?

endodontists placing implants has never and will never make sense to me. it's so counterintuitive and seems to go against everything that endodontics as a specialty stands for. not a knock on endo specifically but more a generalized statement that it's kind of sad how EVERY specialty (almost) is trying to get a hand on the implant market and call themselves the implant specialists. perio wants implants bc they're the "bone specialists" and think they can manage soft tissue and bone better when placing implants, OMFS wants implants bc they're the surgeons and implant placement is a type of surgery, prosth wants implants bc they're ultimately the ones restoring implants, GP wants implants bc it's not necessarily rocket science and heavily restore implants as well, and now endo wants implants bc they're the best at determining whether a tooth is salvagable with RCT. understandable bc implants are $$$$$$ and the future, but it's all kinda pathetic everyone's trying to come up with an excuse as to why they're better suited to place implants when it's actually just about the bottom line. with all that being said, at the end of the day if i had to pick one specialty that seems to almost have no right dabbling in implants i'd say it's endo bc endodontics as a rule is the specialty of SAVING teeth...

end rant 😀

hey there,
no haven't heard from anyone yet. I submitted my PASS about a month ago and some other individual apps in late May. looking at previous threads, I think we might hear in the next month or so. good luck!

WOW you submitted your applications really early!! 👍 Are you a dental student or a practicing dentist? I thought I was pretty early in the cycle because my third year grade and rank didn't get finalized until late June.

I applied to Maryland, VCU, UPENN, Einstein, Luteran medical center, UCLA, Ohio State, Stony Brook, Tufts, NYU, and WVU. May I ask you where you applied and for what reasons? I heard it is pretty tough to get into an endo program as a fresh grad. Any input about my selection will be appreciated. Thanks and good luck to you too!!

Hey jpark,
I'm a practicing dentist. I applied to UCSF, UCLA, LLU, USC, Lutheran, Einstein, UW, UT San Antonio, Baylor, VA Long Beach, UIC, and OHSU. Yea, I've heard the same about fresh grads but there are always people that get in right out of school. I wouldn't despair about that too much. With that said, I think endo is a specialty that really looks for people with experience in both endo and life. Good luck to you too! Let's keep this updated as we hear back - hopefully- from the programs.

I know that endo does not participate in Match, so if someone receives an acceptance from one school, how does that work? Is it similar to dental school where you can wait to hear back from schools you want to attend and then make a decision? Ex. acceptance to an expensive private school vs waiting to hear back from an instate program

I heard from previous applicants that if the program director likes you, he/she will call you within a day or two after your interview and offer you a position. They usually give you 2 to 3 days for you to decide and your decision must be firm i.e. you will have to withdraw all other applications. So if you are still waiting for your top choice and you think you have a good chance, you should not accept the offer from other programs. It would be unethical to say yes to one program and wait for an answer from another because each program only offers 3 to 4 positions.

At my school last year, someone who accepted an offer did not show up and we only had two endodontic residents instead of three. I am not sure exactly what happened to him/her but this could be the consequence of such unethical decision described above.

Hey,

Hi cuspofcarabelli,

UAB has an endodontics program. Please refer to the following links:

http://aae.org/Dental_Professionals...ages/University_of_Alabama_at_Birmingham.aspx

In Georgia though, I know there is an endo program at Georgia health sciences university but I haven't heard of one in UGA.

I think the requirement is pretty similar in most programs. although they say minimally over 3.0 GPA, above 80 on NBDE part I, etc., due to the heavy volume of applicants and their high stats, you may want to present a higher ranking and a board score to be competitive i.e. rank within top 10% and board score above 90. It would be very significant if you are trying to get in as a fresh grad. Good luck!👍

Invited to an interview at tufts in September. Got the call today!!

Congrats!!! I got the call today too!! YAY!
Congrats!! Thanks for keeping us posted. Anyone hear from other programs? I think most of the invites will probably come next week...hopefully.

Got an email from PENN for the interview earlier this week. 🙂

Good luck to you too!

I got interviews at Baylor and Iowa this last week!!

👍👍👍👍👍

Anyone else have updates? Perhaps we can all help each other out by sharing where we got an interview (when and if we get one) and when the interview is scheduled. Past threads have done this and it's been helpful.

Good luck! Let me know if I can help in any way, I went through the process last year and am a current resident at Maryland.

Thanks for the help! Do you remember when most of the interviews were? Based on previous threads, it seems like they were mostly the last 2 weeks of August and into the first part of September.

My interviews were from the last week of August (UMKC was first) to the third week of September.

Where: VA Long Beach
Invite: via phone
Dates Offered 9/2, 9/6
